Orioles re-sign Steve Pearce to major league contract

Apr 29, 2014, 8:39 PM EDT

From the club’s official Twitter account

Pearce was designated for assignment by the Orioles seven days ago and got claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays. But the 31-year-old rejected that claim and instead elected to test the free agent waters, where Baltimore offered the best deal and a guaranteed major league roster spot (for now at least).

Pearce is a .237/.316/.376 career hitter in 854 plate appearances at the major league level.

He will provide depth at first base while Chris Davis recovers from an oblique strain.

Can someone explain why the Orioles just released this guy only to sign him a week after? Not sure if they just re-constructed the contract or something.

At the time, Chris Davis wasn’t hurt and I guess they figured they could DFA him and there would be no problem. Now Davis is on the DL and they need that extra depth at the first base position. I’m betting he’ll be DFAed again when Davis is ready to come back.

husky2score they sent him down to minors like 2 days score chris davis got hurt he did not have any more options so any team could claim him bluejays did he rejected it though and decided to be a free agent instead and O’s sign him

    Exactly what wilmyers said…

Chris Davis got hurt and they didn’t want to play markakis at 1st base more than they absolutely had to.

Dan is a slick one. He used a loophole in the rules to bypass the 30 day wait usually associated with these types of moves.
