Bruce Chen has been scratched from today’s scheduled start and may not be able to pitch this weekend either because of a swollen disk in his back that has the Royals left-hander in what he described as “constant pain.”

Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports that the swollen disk is pressing against nerves and causing “pain shooting down his leg.” He received an epidural injection to ease the swelling.

McCullough writes that “Chen has been managing this condition for weeks,” which helps explain his 7.45 ERA in four starts after the Royals re-signed the 37-year-old to a two-year contract this offseason.

Announcement: Hardball Talk‘s partner FanDuel is hosting a one-day $45,000 Fantasy Baseball league for Wednesday night’s MLB games. It’s $25 to join and first prize is $7,000. Starts at 7:05pm ET on WednesdayHere’s the FanDuel link.

Silly Royals, signing 37 year old players to multiple year contracts is the Phillie’s gig, not yours!

I had the same injury. It was difficult to even get out of bed. Get well soon, Bruce!

That sounds very not fun. Considering what you posted just the other day about the Royals not having a backup middle infielder though, perhaps they are not quick to respond to roster issues by making changes. It sounds like Mr. Chen could benefit from 15 days to let this situation heal up.

    Give me an “A”!

Well, a good place to start would be finding a different stance on defense. Gotta like his unconventional approach, but that can’t be comfortable after a couple innings.

Constant pain shooting down his leg and he’s ineffective. If only there was some kind of reserve squad he could be placed upon for about two weeks.

Chen signed a one year deal in the off season with a mutual option for 2015.
