Padres activate Jedd Gyorko from paternity leave

Apr 30, 2014, 6:07 PM EDT

From the Padres’ official Twitter account

Gyorko missed the first two games of the Padres’ three-game set against the Giants to be with his wife Karley while she gave birth to twin boys. The 25-year-old second baseman signed a five-year, $35 million extension with the San Diego front office earlier this month. He’s batting just .144/.218/.211 with one home run and nine RBI in 26 games this season after hitting .249/.301/.444 with 23 homers and 63 RBI in 125 games last year.

Had a strong season last year, off to a poor start this year, hopefully with his wife, having delivered, he get get back to playing ball, and doesn’t end up being one of those guys, who was given a contract too early in his career, and not living up to it

Waiting for someone to do a study on how well hitters perform while their wives are pregnant, if we can find evidence it’s a distraction we might need a Coitus Clause in future contracts.

He should get double the leave for twins.

Which reminds me of a story about Daisy and Violet Hilton, siamese twins – and fairly attractive ones at that – who were joined at the hip at a time (nineteen thirties and forties, I think) when the surgical procedures to separate conjoined twins didn’t exist yet. They were known for their promiscuity. One day, while traveling with a carnival, they pulled into a truck stop and went in for lunch. They saw a familiar guy sitting at the counter. Daisy said to Violet, hey, isn’t he the one we…you know…that night in Cleveland? And Violet said, yeah, that’s him alright, let’s go say hello. So they walked up to him and tapped him on the shoulder, and Daisy said “Excuse me, we were wonderin’ if you remembered us?”

I was never activated from paternity leave. Twenty six years later, my daughter still has me wrapped around her pinky.
