Giants place Matt Cain on the disabled list with cut on finger

CSN Bay Area’s Andrew Baggarly reports that the Giants have placed starter Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 24, with a cut on his right index finger. To take Cain’s spot on the roster, the Giants have called up Jake Dunning from Triple-A Fresno. Yusmeiro Petit will start in Cain’s place against the Pirates on Monday.

Baggarly adds that Cain threw a bullpen on Friday with a covering over the cut on his finger and surmises that the cut hasn’t closed or opened back up. It was initially believed that Cain wouldn’t need to go on the disabled list. Cain suffered the injury using a kitchen knife.

Cain is winless in five starts, carrying a 4.35 ERA with a 25/10 K/BB ratio in 31 innings.

Dunning, 25, has a 2.51 ERA in 14 1/3 innings with Fresno, spanning one start and seven relief appearances.

    Eduardo Escobar time?

When we had the first post on this unfortunate accident, I commented that it would make a LOT more sense to have a team hire a clubhouse person to handle such duties. Let me make that a bit more strenuous now that it has led to the DL – Leave the knives alone! This is so needless.

Alternately, Cainer could try letting the knife drop on the floor instead of attempting to catch it. With his pitching hand.

Because players would patiently stand around waiting for the sandwich cutter guy without doing it themselves? Or would the knives be locked up out of players reach to avoid that possibility?

Surely guys like him would employ their own cooks..

We can’t have all-stars with blood on their hands…

He might have his own cook but this happened in the clubhouse right before the game.

Not the dumbest excuse I’ve heard to go on the DL. Didn’t Schmoltz have to miss time because he was ironing a shirt he was wearing?
