Bob Dutton of The News Tribune reports that the Mariners have demoted outfielder Abraham Almonte to Triple-A Tacoma and plan to recall James Jones.

Almonte has been struggling mightily at the plate, carrying a .540 OPS into Sunday’s game against the Astros. He did not start Sunday, but did pinch-run and stole his third base in four attempts. Manager Lloyd McClendon told Almonte, “If you play well, you’ll be back.”

Jones, 25, was playing well for Tacoma, slashing .313/.382/.450 in 90 plate appearances.

Should not have been there in the first place .

Did he not have a good spring and play his way onto the roster out of camp? No really, did he? I can’t remember…

.178/.256/.301 in the spring, but he did manage 8 BB against 10 K’s in 81 PA. Putting him in the leadoff slot was doomed to fail. The kid struck out 40 times in 112 PA with only 6 BB. McClendon’s managerial style seems largely predicated on wishful thinking.

Just like the owners and G.M. and their wishful thinking that flushing that much money down the toilet for Cano would be anywhere close to being a good deal for the team and their bottom line…

McClendon’s mistake was far LESS costly than Cano’s contract…

What a poor job the M’s have done with him. He was batting leadoff until very recently and is now being sent to Triple A? Why wouldn’t they have dropped him in the order before last week?

The Tigers are surly glad to have Lloyd poached from the coaching staff. Wally Joyner has this team swinging the bats better than they ever did under big Mac’s tutelage

This was bound to happen. Im just glad Saunders seems to be stepping up his game and earned his spot in center. I really really think the mariners need to go out and bring Morales back or this season could get out of control. LOMO is terrible and Hart(although I think will come around) isn’t tearing the cover off of the ball either. We need another bat and Morales would fit the bill

Almonte has a good, hustling attitude. He’ll be back with the Mariners at some point.
