Fun with early-season stats: a reliever is tied for the league lead in wins

May 6, 2014, 9:20 AM EST

Roy Face once won 18 games out of the bullpen. John Hiller once won 17 games as a reliever, and that was a couple of years after having a heart attack. But that was a different game. Relievers pitched longer and it was somewhat easier to win games out of the bullpen. Someone should tell that to Jean Machi of the San Francisco Giants. Check him out on the wins leaderboard:

If this holds up he’ll be 25-0 with 86 innings pitched in 86 appearances. I feel like that would win him some awards or something.

Flukey, of course. A function of both him doing his job and the Giants scoring runs at the right time. But still kind of fun.

That would have to put him in the running for the Trevor Hoffman Award for 2014.

Machi is awesome. Very athletic for a big guy and can pitch anywhere in the game. We got him from the Mexican League as a very low cost FA, another good scouting move by Sabean and Co. Affeldt is healthy and kicking ass too. The Giants bullpen is back to being a dominant force, a must for a Bochy team. He loves him some bullpen from the 6th inning on.

Not flukey. He’s a winner; the guy just knows how to win.

Obviously the best reliever in baseball, since the Win in the metric by which all pitchers must be judged.

Even drove in the go-ahead RBI last night (with a perfect sac bunt, in his second ever big league at bat) and stole a base!

His Will to Win is off the charts.

And if you read the whole stat line, a pretty good pitcher the last month.

Like that time Alfredo “el patoncito” Aceves won 10 games out of the bullpen for the Yankees in his rookie season.

Machi has been very good in Mexican Summer League and during winter ball, he was also one of the best relievers during the Caribbean Series.

over 15 wins as a reliever would be pretty special, and extremely opportunistic.
