Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reports that the Reds have signed first baseman Shelley Duncan and catcher Lou Marson to minor league deals.

Duncan, 34, spent the spring with the Diamondbacks, posting a .630 OPS in 25 spring at-bats. In a handful of playing time at the big league level last season with the Rays, Duncan posted a .606 OPS.

Marson, 27, spent the spring with the Phillies, doubling in one of his three at-bats. The Phillies released him in mid-March. Marson had spent his time with the Indians since joining them in the Cliff Lee trade in 2009.

The Reds are obviously trying to recreate the 2011 Indians bench. Austin Kearns: also available.

Marson’s a good defensive catcher, and not too old yet; as Corky Miller is not on Reds 40-man roster, maybe Marson makes a more flexible 4th catcher in the organization. Corky should be coaching soon anyway.

Duncan? No f’ing idea why they signed him. No visible value.

And no SS signed. Walt is oblivious like that.

Why did the Red’s sign Marson? What about keeping catcher Bryan Anderson in mind for the big leagues? He’s a former big leaguer that they sent to double A ball where he had an average of .343… They just pulled him up to Kentucky last week and hardly gave him a chance to do some work before they signed Marson (they already have too many catchers in the organization) and the next few games after Anderson showed everyonewhat he’s made of.. batted .429 and had 4 out of the 5 RBI’s for the game Saturday.. finished out the series Monday with a .400 and an RBI, getting on base 3 times.. now THAT’s who should be playing alongside Merseraco. Max Ramirez isn’t doing well, he’s just taking up roster space. And CLEARLY Barnhart just isn’t ready for the big leagues, prospect or not.
