Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is sick of playing on Sunday nights

St. Louis has played on Sunday night in two straight weeks as part of ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” game, with another appearance slated for May 25, and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is sick of having a different schedule than other teams.

Here’s what he told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

That reply, “Consider yourself lucky”–that doesn’t mean anything to us. Our job is to win games, and I feel that this is something that affects us one way or another. Nobody is going to give us any sympathy on this but if you’re seeking an honest reply and what they keep telling us–consider it fortunate–it just doesn’t fit to us. …

It is a compliment that they want to see us on the national scene. (But) I don’t think it’s taken into consideration at all that it makes it harder for us. You get back at 4 a.m. and have to play the next day? You’re telling me that’s not going to affect you? We’re not looking for excuses, but it’s happened to us. You start watching guys get run down.

It’s certainly a fair point and one I’ve heard raised by prominent NFL teams that frequently play on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday nights instead of the usual Sunday afternoons, but like Matheny says it’s tough to feel sorry for a team when the reason their schedule is different is that they’re consistently so good and everyone wants to watch them in primetime.

Goold notes that the Cardinals’ upcoming May 25 appearance on “Sunday Night Baseball” is followed the next day by an afternoon game against the Yankees, so that’s exactly the type of quick turnaround Matheny is frustrated by.

You’re not alone Matheny, I’m sick of the Cards being on Sunday nights too

Go call Adrian Gonzalez and whine about it all you want.

It’s always either L.A., Boston, NYY or St Louis. Explains why I haven’t turned watched Sunday Night Baseball in years.

The Mets seem to have played on Sunday night a surprising amount in recent years. Which is odd since they aren’t very good. Fortunately they aren’t scheduled at all this year so far.

And the Yankees are sick of every time they go on the road their final game at every stop is at night so the home team can make sure they maximize profits. Everyone has crap to deal with, so deal with it.

Not only that. MLB makes sure to schedule no days off between series played in NY and the west coast.

Last week the NYY had to travel all the way from the east coast to Los Angeles to play in Anaheim, when the series was over they had a day off.

I think there is also a span that goes:
NYY playing in Tampa, the next day they play in Toronto, when the series is over they do not rest and go to Texas, then without a day off when that series is over they go to play in Boston.

“Nobody is going to give us any sympathy on this.” — Matheny

    Story checks out.

Hold on now; from the context it appears that Matheny was asked about Sunday Night Baseball so he was giving an honest answer.

The way I read it, Matheny did not just go on some Sunday Night Baseball rant.

Anyway, shrugs, Guy is going look out for his club, so he’s going to say stuff like that regardless of context.

He wants to take the team to church sunday nights so cut him some slack!

Sounds like frustration from a team that was supposed to run away with the division this year….

Honestly, I’m surprised that MLBPA hasn’t gotten a provision in the CBA preventing a team from having to play a day game after playing in another city the previous night.

Mawinnie should be more concerned about his inept lineup. Too many Tarzans that are hitting like Jane.

Jane was always an underrated hitter…

Who set the time for the Memorial Day game for 3:15, knowing the Cardinals played in Cincinnati the night before? Doesn’t the home team set the start times of games, except for the national Saturday and Sunday games?

  12. swmocardsfan - May 12, 2014 at 12:54 PM

As a Cardinal fan, Matheny needs to have them better prepared. All teams have to deal with crappy schedules at some point, but none of them whine about it. It is his job as a manager to have his team prepared, no matter what. Shelby Miller worked on normal rest and he couldn’t have hit water if he fell out a boat last night with his pitches. What was his excuse? Mark Ellis is hitting a robust .200 and Matheny has him as the starting 2nd baseman. Yes, many picked them to run away with the division as mentioned above, but Matheny needs to face the harsh reality that this could turn into a very long season if he doesn’t reach these players and get them to step up. Unless the bats wake up and pitchers start hitting their spots and generating outs, this is going to be a season of looking up at the Brewers.

    • Kevin Gillman - May 12, 2014 at 2:16 PM

But what is a long season for a Cardinals fan? 82 wins? I do agree though he needs to put the blame on himself, and his player, not the schedule. But also, the Cardinals have had some winning teams the last few seasons, they are contenders every single season. I don’t see why this season won’t be any different for them.

Someone has to say it. If Matheny used more than 20 or 21 of the guys on his roster more regularly, his guys would not get as run down. Watching this team is to realize that 4 or 5 guys may as well be in witness protection.

  14. metalhead65 - May 12, 2014 at 2:15 PM

if it is any consolation to him most fans outside of st.louis are sick of seeing them to. as a Reds fan living in the midwest we are forced to have them shown because of their stupid blackout rules. I don’t watch them of course but it sucks seeing the reds game advertised on mlb or espn then having a cardinals or cubs or yankees red sox game shown instead.

  15. klukstr - May 12, 2014 at 4:57 PM

Matheny finally realizing he isn’t built to be a manager hopefully he soon packs it up and goes cause he sucks. When they carried his ass last year with the monster numbers they had he was glorified now he is losing probably cause he has had 30 different lineups in already and wants to blame Sunday nights.Other teams would relish to be on primetime television.Beat it Mike let Oquendo step in…

they lost Friday night, lost Saturday night. won Sunday night. somewhere sometime I’ll see the math in this!
