The Mets and Yankees wore silly caps last night

May 13, 2014, 9:45 AM EDT

The Mets cap — orange brim — is at least a regular cap they sometimes wear in games. The Yankees’ light-brimmed thing is a batting practice cap:

If you’re one of the core, handful of teams that has steadfastly stuck to sweet-looking traditional uniforms for most your existence — like the Yankees, Dodgers, Tigers and Red Sox — you shouldn’t be in the business of sullying your classic look with stuff like this. Leave that to the less-snazzy teams in the league.

    Craig Calcaterra – Cap Snob.

    • Craig Calcaterra - May 13, 2014 at 12:45 PM

I make no apologies for my cap snobbery. As a bald man, caps are extremely important to me.

    • scatterbrian - May 13, 2014 at 2:04 PM

      Like that’s a bad thing?

  2. Bob - May 13, 2014 at 9:57 AM

I’m fine with alt caps, alt jerseys for most teams, but the Yankees shouldn’t do this.

  3. jerseydevi1 - May 13, 2014 at 10:02 AM

The look on CC’s face in that picture says it all…

  4. RoyHobbs39 - May 13, 2014 at 10:04 AM

I think the alternate Yankees cap is the secondary story compared to that hair growth on CC’s face.

The Boss is rolling over in his grave right now!

  5. georgewashingtonsghost - May 13, 2014 at 10:09 AM

I like the Mets’ cap. They should wear that more often.

  6. sdelmonte - May 13, 2014 at 10:09 AM

Not surprising that the Mets would have alternate caps, since they always do. But a second cap from the Yankees…yeah, it’s not right. No wonder they lost.

  7. nbjays - May 13, 2014 at 10:12 AM

Where are the Baseball Decorum Police™ when you need them?

  8. ctony1216 - May 13, 2014 at 10:19 AM

If they’re going to break a 90-year tradition and risk despoiling their brand to chase some extra licensing money, you’d think they’d go with something fans might actually want to buy.

    • TheMorningStar - May 13, 2014 at 1:22 PM

That’s a great point you make.

Will the stupid white brimmed cap now be part of the teams’ silly “Our history, your tradition” slogan, ha ha?

  9. phillyguyindc - May 13, 2014 at 10:22 AM

The Yankees having a white brim upset you, huh? lol

I don’t think either hat looks bad.

  10. rbj1 - May 13, 2014 at 10:24 AM

Steinbrenner brothers made a deal with New Era. This is the result. George (for all his faults, and he had so many) would never have done this.

    • nbjays - May 13, 2014 at 3:00 PM

He would if he’d just finished spending the better part of a billion dollars on free agents in the off season, and needed money to buy more to replace the old, lame and injured.

  11. tysonpunchinguterus - May 13, 2014 at 10:36 AM

If the Yankees are going to wear an alternate hat, this should be the one:

    Like the mets hat

  13. Carl Hancock - May 13, 2014 at 11:18 AM

Craig is a PED’s apologist and generally rushes to defend anyone in baseball that is being persecuted, no matter how guilty, yet he gets riled up by a team wearing an alternate cap for one game. Nice.

    • Craig Calcaterra - May 13, 2014 at 12:47 PM

Yes, you totally nailed me. Feeling one thing about one topic and another thing about a totally different topic makes me a big fat hypocrite. I will no go hide my head in shame.

      • thisdamnbox - May 13, 2014 at 2:37 PM

As long as you hide it in an alt Yankee cap! “:^)>

  14. lukedunphysscienceproject - May 13, 2014 at 11:23 AM

I’m not one of those “tradition is everything” guys. I just don’t think you should change a look unless you’re improving it. And that Yankees hat is a bad look. Please don’t do that again.

  15. echech88 - May 13, 2014 at 11:37 AM

    Oh the horror

  16. 18thstreet - May 13, 2014 at 11:38 AM

The Red Sox wear stupid jerseys on Friday nights, so they’re more than content to mess with their uniform, too.

  17. shanabartels - May 13, 2014 at 11:41 AM

Was there any particular reason for wearing the BP caps? I noticed it last night and had no idea why they didn’t just wear the regular ones.

  18. blabidibla - May 13, 2014 at 11:46 AM

Maybe it’s because I work in comic books, but I first read this headline as “The Mets and Yankees wore silly CAPES last night.”

That would have been much funnier.

    • paperlions - May 13, 2014 at 3:06 PM

      Holy hell…that is funny.

If teams had “Cape Night”, in which all of the players wore capes…I’d be going to those games….heck, I’d have the Cape Night Season Ticket Package.

      • Francisco (FC) - May 13, 2014 at 3:40 PM

Just imagine a speedy guy trying to stretch a single into a double… the 1st Baseman would just pull on his cape to knock him down.

      • paperlions - May 13, 2014 at 3:43 PM

…and that is probably just one of the many excellent reasons to make capes a standard part of the baseball uniform.

  19. mvd513 - May 13, 2014 at 12:12 PM

get over it Mr I love boring uniforms.

  20. TheMorningStar - May 13, 2014 at 12:43 PM

Maybe MLB can have, as Jeter’s official HoF photo, a picture of him in that insipid cap?

  21. sandwiches4ever - May 13, 2014 at 1:57 PM

I tuned in the game last night and was baffled. Why the hell would you wear that ugly ass hat? I don’t get it.

  22. anxovies - May 13, 2014 at 7:21 PM

The cap should go the way of Dandy, the ill-fated Yankee mascot that briefly appeared in the late 1970s.
