Matt Williams and Kirk Gibson raced each other back to the dugout

Aww, this is cute.

Nationals manager Matt Williams and Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson are good friends from Williams’ four seasons spent on Gibson’s coaching staff in Arizona and so yesterday after exchanging lineup cards at home plate they did this:

Scott Allen of the Washington Post has some more details, including the fact that Williams and Gibson used to go running regularly together in Arizona. As for Gibson’s obvious head start–and the fact that Williams apparently didn’t know he was in a race until it was already going–the Diamondbacks skipper asked: “Is that cheating or is that just smart?”

    Did Williams bench himself and later give himself a lecture about the need to hustle all the time no matter what?
