Juan Lagares is riding the pine for the fourth time in five games. This is idiotic.

The Mets lineup for tonight’s game was just released. And Juan Lagares is not in it. Eric Young is playing center. For the fourth time in five games. Oh, and Bobby Abreu is in the lineup. Not Lagares, though!

This despite the fact that Lagares is not injured. This despite the fact that Lagares is easily the Mets’ best defensive center fielder. Heck, he may be the best defensive center fielder in the game. This despite the fact that he’s also the Mets’ best offensive center fielder too, hitting .296/.336/.439. This, most notably, despite the fact that Terry Collins said earlier this month that Lagares is his every day center fielder. To this I say:

Why isn’t Lagares starting? Does anyone plan on asking Terry Collins about it today? How about asking Jon Neise how he feels about the team’s best outfielder being benched in favor of defensive whiz Bobby Abreu?

Inquiring minds want to know.

He probably did something disprespectful of the game, like flip a bat during BP, or something.

Don’t get me wrong… Terry Collins is a god awful manager BUT..
Sandy Alderson really hamstrung Collins in the outfield. Chris Young’s contract is putrid & Alderson guaranteed him at bats. EY has the best WAR on the Mets because he is a spark plug and provides us a lead off batter, which the Mets otherwise don’t have. Granderson is our highest paid player and clearly won’t be sitting on the bench. That leaves Lugares as the odd man out, even though he’s arguably one of the best young center fielders in baseball.
Collin’s management of 1B, the OF & SS position this season have been a complete joke. I really can’t stand TC… God I hate being a Mets fan.

They should see if EY or Murphy can play SS then, so they could either have EY at 2B and murphy at SS or vice versa, opening an OF spot for lagares.

“what happened? you said she was a real sparkplug?!”

“Nah, I said BUTT PLUG, she’s heinous”

Well, replace the word ‘must’ve’ with ‘repeatedly,’ and the word ‘dog’ with ‘son.’

  4. xdj511 - May 16, 2014 at 3:45 PM

A few days ago the Mets announcers were all over Terry for leaving EY2 on the bench in favor of Chris Young, but acknowledged that it was probably because he was making 7.5 million so he HAD to be in the lineup.

Same thing with Granderson, he’s being paid a ton to hit below .200 and strike out more than once a game.

In the games before the first two at Yankee Stadium it was pretty obvious that the Mets needed a spark in the leadoff position, and so EY2 got back into the lineup, and since Lagares isn’t the one making oodles of money he was the odd man out.

The Abreu thing though… that makes no sense at all… so yeah maybe Lagares did kick Terry’s dog or something.

Perhaps Laguares isn’t fully healed from the hammy that put him on the DL two weeks ago?

    • imnotyourbuddyguy - May 16, 2014 at 3:57 PM

“Terry Collins said Saturday that he is still not sure if Lagares will return from the DL when he is eligible Wednesday.” – April 26th

EY2 has been pretty awesome, and from what I gather he is pretty good with the glove. The Mets might as well see what they have in Abreu since they bothered signing him. Maybe they are trying to showcase their tradeable parts (Young, Young2, Abreu)?

  7. antelope850 - May 16, 2014 at 4:04 PM

Granderson’s in center, EY2 in left. Past games, Chris Young in center, EY2 in left. Doesn’t make it right – Lagares needs to be the every day CF, and Abreu shouldn’t see the field – but just to get it right…

It’s the Mets ….why is everybody surprised.

You had me up until the Ozzie part.

Eric Young is fast and therefore a leadoff hitter, something the Mets don’t have. At least in the mind of Terry Collins. Doesn’t matter that his OBP this year is .326 and for his career it’s .325. As for his defense, he’s a replacement level left fielder, which is more terrible than not.

Collins apparently said during his pregame press conference that he’s more focused on offense than defense right now. So he’s taken the same lineup that scored 0 runs the last two days and replaced Chris Young with Bobby Abreu.

    • mwarneridx - May 16, 2014 at 6:57 PM

EY2 is actually a very good defensive LF… his bat is never going to make it, though, and stolen bases do not a leadoff man make. Thought I heard something once about not stealing 1B…

Lagares has surprised with the bat so far and is a truly outstanding defensive CF. More than anything, I’m not figuring there’s a division title in the offing, so it seems like the smart play is to use the young players until they absolutely prove they can’t play, and work in the again mercenaries around them.

Seems to have cost Farnsworth his job, at least (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Thank you for posting this Craig. Terry Collins is beyond stupid. Unfortunately, his general manager is just as dumb and likes obedient lap dogs like Collins as his managers.

  12. crisisofinfinitephils - May 16, 2014 at 7:34 PM

Chris Young makes 7.5 million, which in the Mets world is somewhere around 25 million per year.

  13. dondada10 - May 16, 2014 at 7:57 PM

Well at least by benching Osvaldo nobody notices that they called Wilmer Flores up only to play Ruben Tejada over him.

    • adenzeno - May 16, 2014 at 9:12 PM

      THAT is amazing…

    • arrow43050 - May 16, 2014 at 11:19 PM

apparently Wilmer Flores caught a bug or the flu or something…or so they claim

    • sdbunting - May 16, 2014 at 11:57 PM

Keith has done nothing but “notice” for a week, TRUST.

  14. yahmule - May 16, 2014 at 8:59 PM

I’m surprised Collins hasn’t hinted that Lagares might be in line for some saves.

  15. raynman49 - May 16, 2014 at 9:16 PM

I hope there is a trade upcoming. Lagares is the center fielder. Maybe they’re hoping one of the other outfielders will be good enough to open another teams eyes. I’m sure this is not Collins’ call

  16. arrooo - May 16, 2014 at 10:48 PM

All I can think of is that there has to be something physically wrong with Lagares and Collins and Co. won’t let on. Everyone killed Collins when he took out Dillon Gee when he had just 80 pitches and it turns out he was nursing a Lat muscle strain and didn’t want to say anything. I just pray to God that there is a good reason for Lagares not playing because if I have to be a fan of this team and they are run that poorly I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to take it. Granderson and Young were playing every day when they were hitting around .100 and Lagares is far superior defensively to either of them. He could be hitting .000 and they should still play him if they were willing to play Young and Granderson everyday.

  18. conjecture101 - May 16, 2014 at 11:33 PM

“Eric Young is playing center. For the fourth time in five games.”

Eric Young is not playing center. Eric Young has played exactly 3 innings at Center Field this season and none of those innings have occurred in the last five games.

    • godsmacked1 - May 17, 2014 at 8:27 AM

The fact that EY is even starting, let alone leading off, tells you all you need to know about them. Where is Don Hahn when you need him?

  19. godsmacked1 - May 17, 2014 at 8:25 AM

Craig, as a Mets fan, I can tell you this makes all the sense in the world. They’re the Mets. Nothing ever really makes sense in their world.

  20. zdravit - May 17, 2014 at 5:48 PM

    EY got that speed, yo.
