Video: Paul Goldschmidt’s second homer had everything

May 18, 2014, 10:30 AM EDT

Seriously: it had the straightest fastball you’ll ever see from catcher/relief pitcher Drew Butera, it had Senator John McCain and his wife finally breaking out the fist-pumping and celebrating moves they were gonna use if election night: 2008 had gone better for them and it had some due catching the thing one-handed while holding a kid in his other arm.

Now, the kid looks way less than pleased that her dad is freaking out like this — and any one of those catch-a-homer-while-holding-a-baby things is mere inches away from tragedy, but it’s still a great video.

Truly, just saw that dad fell down while holdin his baby catchin that hr ball. Really need to avoid this while holdin a child.

Meh…. Not even close to the same guy catching two home run balls 420 feet away.

that kid has been at the park for at least 5 hours. She is past spent.

I am surprised she isn’t kicking and screaming

I guess this changes the using Butera as a reliever argument.

this was such a weird move. He got up in the 8th, with one out and the Diamondbacks down 7. Then whoever was in gave up 2 home runs and mattingly came to get him for the last two outs.

I don’t think I have ever seen a position player come in the middle of an inning.

Also, he looked like a position player pitching.. I didn’t see the last outing, but there was nothing in this outing that made me think he could pitch above mop up work in college.

Bare handed catch alone was pretty impressive, then add a kid in the other arm, pretty nice. There might be several mlb outfielders that couldn’t pull that off.

  7. blacksables - May 18, 2014 at 12:16 PM

See, this all happened because Butera threw 11 pitches the other night, and then was called upon again to pitch after being abused the previous outing. How come we’re not hearing about Mattingly being an idiot and everyone demanding he be fired?

Lol, what high school kid wrote this article for their school paper? “Gonna”? “Dude” misspelled?

  9. Old Gator - May 18, 2014 at 1:24 PM

I think election night 2008 might have gone better for the Senator if he hadn’t had third string catcher Sarah Palin pitching in relief. The Butera thing is in its second iteration and has already gotten as old as a gout of Palin tripe at a knuckledragger’s convention.

Regardless of who ya voted for, one can’t help wonder if John McCain would’ve won the election with a more reasonable VP pick. Can we use advanced metrics to figure this out? Weighted Vice Presidential Pick Average? Someone call Nate Silver…

“2008 had gone better for them and it had some due catching the thing one-handed while holding a kid in his other arm.”

What?… lol There’s a “due” that comes with catching a baseball with a kid in your arm?

You forgot to mention the balk by Butera. That was a balk… he did not stop. He almost stopped… but had a little glove movement there.

    Goldie… So fun to watch
