Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown thinks Chief Wahoo should go

Yesterday 50 senators urged the NFL to change the Washington Redskins’ team name. Today Reid Epstein of the Wall Street Journal asks some senators if their local Native American exploiters need some change too.

Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio said he didn’t object to the Cleveland Indians‘ name, but he does want the Chief Wahoo logo to go. Epstein couldn’t get comment from Georgia’s senators, Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss, on the Atlanta Braves, as they were not part of the Redskins thing — that was a Democratic party jam, and Isakson and Chambliss are Republicans — so they presumably weren’t immediately available on the topic.

As I’ve written here before, I’m generally OK with Indians and Braves as names — unlike the Redskins they’re not inherently slurs — but Wahoo and the Tomahawk Chop and its attendant whooping should be dropped like third period French.

And just to head off at least a portion of the inevitable crap-fest that will appear in the comments, no, I do not think that the government should be involved in such matters. If Congressmen want to make statements like they did yesterday, by all means, do so, as they’re citizens too and moving public opinion in any way they can is totally fair game. But the names and marks of private businesses are not of governmental concern.

I feel like I shouldn’t have to clarify that kind of thing, but if you’ve hung out in any of the Wahoo threads around here, you kinda know that I do.

Chief Wahoo always has been mind-boggling. Hard to see that image and think that basic respect of American Indians as humans was something the “artist” could even conceive of.

This is ridiculous. Save Chief Wahoo!

Florida State has an agreement with the Seminoles on the use of their name. Straight up racial slurs like “Redskins” or “Chief Wahoo” are totally unacceptable. “Braves” and “Indians” are debatable but definitely in bad taste. Fifty years from now when the country is a lot less white there will be no arguments like this.

The Most Popular Artwork ever from Ohio is the ‘People Not Mascots’ Logo designed by our own David Jakupca……created 25 years ago ans still in the daily news somewhere worldwide.

The ‘People Not Mascots’ Logo is meant to be a Native American protest caricature of the racists Chief Wahoo logo of the Cleveland Indians Baseball team. It was originally painted by David Jakupca at the historic ARK in Berea for the Committee of 500 Years of Dignity and Resistance with the Lake Erie native American Council incorporating elements of the Theory of Iceality on Environmental Arts, it has drawn criticism from some sportswriters, fans and local businessmen, but gained immediate acceptance among humanitarian, religious groups and Native Americans. It gained international popular attention when it was it exhibited by ICEA at the 1993 UN World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna, Austria and has become one of the most recognized anti-racists logo’s in existence. It also caused repercussions for the groups connected with using the logo in protest demonstrations and this has been documented in the INTERNECINE MATRIX..

The Team owners have a right to name their teams whatever they want. You and the senators are way overdoing it here. If someone wanted to name a Team the Minnesota Honky’s Or the St. Paul Crackers I would be PROUD!!! I think the Character looks happy and there is no reason to be ashamed of the Red Skin. Shouldn’t we be Celebrating our diversity!?! People Can’t help what color skin they are born with and we should treat all colors equally. That being said people choose to be Gay and live a Sinful Life Style. I do not believe that we have to like everyone’s behavior! Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin. I am sick of everyone being forced to Tolerate Everything! IT SUCKS! In America we have Freedom of Speech until the Government Tries to take it away from us! More People need to speak what is really on their minds and quit conforming! it is a sign of Weakness! Our Society is Decomposing by the Second and our moral compass is the worst that it has ever been! Much worse than even 5-10 years ago. There is only one Pro Sports Team that needs to change it’s name and that is the New Jersey (DEV_LS) IT’S AMAZING THAT HARDLY ANYONE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT THAT!!!!!!! Repent Sinners Before it is too late!!!!!…………….. .
