The Red Sox are going to be short-handed as they attempt to snap their eight-game losing streak. In addition to Shane Victorino landing on the disabled list, both David Ortiz and Mike Napoli are out of the lineup against the Rays this afternoon.

According to Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com, Ortiz is taking a planned day off due to a calf issue. As for Napoli, he could be sidelined for a little while longer. He’s dealing with a dislocated finger, as well as calf and hamstring issues and flu-like symptoms. It’s unlikely he’ll play again before Tuesday. Bad news for a team which is tied for 20th in the majors in runs scored.

The Red Sox are going with Jonny Gomes in right field, Mike Carp at first base, and A.J. Pierzynski out of the DH spot this afternoon against David Price. Meanwhile, David Ross is catching Jake Peavy. They are off to an early 5-0 lead with their makeshift lineup.

Way to go David Price!! Allowing 5 runs in the first inning. His fastball at 93-94 is 4mph slower than a few years ago.

The Red Sox have an early 5 to 0 lead. Surprisingly, Price has not pitched well against lefties so far his season.

It’s funny they lose two of their only productive players, and then actually score a bunch of runs in the 1st inning that Jake Peavy can give right back.

Aaaaanndd….the Sox haven’t had a hit since the 1st inning, and now are clinging to a two run lead.

    This season stinks.

    Aaaannd it’s tied.

    Good work all around, gentlemen.

So, so many things have to be wrong for Pierzynski to be playing at designated hitter. And, yes, I’m aware it worked out today.

    Number 9 in row.

This time it took 15 innings and the Red Sox used 8 pitchers. The bullpen must be gassed.

“Napoli, he could be sidelined for a little while longer. He’s dealing with a dislocated finger, as well as calf and hamstring issues and flu-like symptoms.”

Sounds like Nap had a few last nite. He came in looking ragged, and Farrell asked “What’s wrong?”

Not wanting to say “Hungover”, Nap gave him several choices to tell the press.

Like Parcels would say. You are what you are.
Right now, the Red Sox are really bad.

Looking at the Red Sox payroll flexibility after this season:

Peavy – done this year … thank you very much
Lester – done … sign the dude
Lackey – option for 2015 at minimum MLB salary – interesting … redo contract
    Pierzinsky – done this year
    Drew – done
    Gomes – done
    Sizemore – done

    Napoli – 1 more year
Ortiz – 2 more years – depending on games played

Aside from Pedroia (10 yrs), GM Cherington controls the deck.
