Ryan Lavaranway out 4-6 weeks for hamate bone surgery

May 30, 2014, 4:20 PM EDT

Red Sox’ catcher/1B Ryan Lavarnway just got called up to the bigs the other day and figured to provide John Farrell with a nice right-handed bat off the bench and some depth at first base. Welp, forget that:

Lavarnway only got four big league games under his belt. Now, after a rehab, you figure he’ll be back in the minors. Tough break.

Craig, Lavarnway has way more than 4 MLB games in his career.

Four to 6 weeks sounds really optimistic for hamate surgery.

Willy Aybar came back from it in 3 weeks, Pablo Sandoval took 7 weeks. Most guys fall between those times unless something goes wrong. The surgical procedure has advanced greatly in the past 10 years or so.

The Panda is now hamate-less, having broken both. Now he’s immune.
