VIDEO: Kolten Wong slugs grand slam off James Shields for his first major league home run

Jun 3, 2014, 8:34 PM EDT

Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong was named the National League Rookie of the Month for May and celebrated Tuesday with this grand slam off Royals starter James Shields

That was the first major league home run for Wong and ended a 20-inning scoreless drought for St. Louis.

Wong has been in a groove offensively and defensively since being recalled from AAA Memphis on May 14.

Gonna need a whole lot more where that came from, otherwise he will eternally be the footnote under any article titled “World Series Game 4.”

Well, that would be a vague goddamn article….add a 2013 to that title.

Congratulations to Wong; however the Cardinals still lost. They are only 1 game above .500. I have not been following them closely this season; however,as they visit Toronto this weekend I am curious. Why is their record not better?

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Jun 3, 2014 at 10:47 PM

Proud: Because they have lost so frequently. OK, OK. Stupid. I’ll downthumb this myself.

        Pitching? Offence? Defense?

    • ultimatecardinalwarrior - Jun 3, 2014 at 11:46 PM

The offense has been really bad, for the most part. It seems everybody except for Peralta has been sapped of their power. The bullpen hasn’t been as good as one would have thought, and the starting pitching not named Wainwright or Wacha has been up and down. Mostly offense, though.

      • proudlycanadian - Jun 3, 2014 at 11:55 PM

Thank you. I look forward to their visit to Toronto.

      • SocraticGadfly - Jun 4, 2014 at 6:34 PM

Matheny doesn’t know how to manage a bullpen, and the OF is bad, especially, yep.

Per Baseball-Reference, every OF is league average or below this year, going by WAA.

    • ereed1286 - Jun 4, 2014 at 12:02 AM

Yeah, I would sum up their mediocre record to the following:
      1. Lack of offense, especially power
      2. Shaky bullpen
      3. At times, questionable managing

      • paperlions - Jun 4, 2014 at 3:08 PM

If by “at times” you mean, during each game. Matheny’s in game management is 12 kinds of horrible. It is true that the team is primarily responsible for losing, but he’s also horrible at putting guys in situations to succeed. He’s just not a smart guy.

        Hey, hye! You’re questioning our Sub-Genius Skipper(TM)!

    • stlouis1baseball - Jun 4, 2014 at 9:56 AM

Issues on offense. Case in point…the 20 inning scoreless drought referenced above.
The fact they also played to most road games (while naturally having the fewest home games) of any team in MLB the 1st month of the season certainly didn’t help.

      • paperlions - Jun 4, 2014 at 3:09 PM

That is true, but they’ve been a disaster during this home stand. The combination of folding at the plate and everyone that pitches in the 8th or 9th insisting on giving up runs in the most creative ways….it has been tough to watch. Honestly, it is like being the Cubs….losing every way you can imagine.

      • stlouis1baseball - Jun 5, 2014 at 9:53 AM

Yeah…they certainly had a golden opportunity to “get right” during the Month of May. And they completed folded. They are starting to piss me off. More and more each day in fact.

      • paperlions - Jun 5, 2014 at 10:02 AM

Me too. Luckily, I am travelling all week so I can’t watch the carnage and get pissed off at both the lack of execution and Matheny’s stupid decisions. They have been really hard to watch….so many guys are leaving the ball in the middle of the zone….either pitch down or up, not freaking mid-thigh.

      • stlouis1baseball - Jun 5, 2014 at 10:37 AM

They have definitely been grooving the ball.
Brightsiding it…they actually won last night while the Brewers, Pirates and Redlegs lost!

Where are you traveling this week?

      • paperlions - Jun 5, 2014 at 10:53 AM

I’m in Puerto Rico, in El Yunque national Forest for work

      • stlouis1baseball - Jun 5, 2014 at 11:09 AM

Enjoy your time (as best you can anyway).

  3. westcoastredbird - Jun 3, 2014 at 11:26 PM

Somebody please send Mawiener a Cardinals 10 gallon ball cap to keep all of these decisions from going over his head! He’s in Waaaaayyyy over his head. About time to clean house.
