The Padres announced yesterday that they have agreed to terms with each of their first three draft picks, including first-round pick shortstop Trea Turner.

Turner was selected No. 13 overall out of North Carolina State earlier this month. John Manuel of Baseball America reports that he’ll receive a $2.9 million bonus, which is $177,000 above the slot value.

Jim Callis of writes that Turner “has the tools to become a dynamic leadoff hitter with his top-of-the-line speed and his ability to control the strike zone,” though there are questions about his bat. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 171 pounds, the 20-year-old should be able to stick at shortstop, but Callis writes that he needs to improve his consistency.

Turner sounds like a future 2nd baseman that can’t hit. The Padres have enough of those already. Nice pick Byrnes.

He is supposed to be a base stealing threat.

        He can’t steal 1st base

He can steal first if the catcher does not hold on to strike three. He also has the speed to beat out infield hits and to bunt his way on.

Most think he is a true SS and he finished with a .342/.425/.507 line after 3 years at NC State. I suppose if I was a Padres fan i’d go straight for the worst case scenario too.

chargrz: Worst kind of fan ever. He stalks these boards with a passion looking to put down his team ( Padres ) , he has no important info and tries to look like a badass putting down Pads. Now when the Padres are playing good ( I know not anytime lately ) he is nowhere to be found. Coward If you ask me….

Chop Fooey you are clueless as usual.

Scouts gave Trea an 80 out of 80 in speed. Is he really Mike Trout fast?

    • renaado - Jun 14, 2014 at 12:53 PM

Could be, but he’s definitely not Billy Hamilton fast though.

He stole 57 bags on 61 tries as a freshman in 63 games. Then 30 for 36 in 56 as a sophomore, and 26 for 30 in 54 this year. He started as an 80 but I think they downgraded him.

They’ll just trade him when he starts to become good.

Put them all in the lineup now, can’t be any worse than the mess out there now.

I thought the second rounder was a tough sign, with a firm college commitment. Maybe he sees a fast track to the big club, the way it’s going.

They have a kid in the system named Jace Peterson with a similar skill set, not mention Everth Cabrera. The Pads like these speedy middle infielders.
