Photo of the Day: Babe Ruth and his dad in a bar in 1915

Jun 14, 2014, 6:45 PM EDT

Pretty much what it sounds like. From John Thorn:

Total hipster bar, man. Look at them serving those artisanal, pre-prohibition cocktails. All old man Ruth is missing is an affected handlebar mustache.

Living over that bar is the primary reason young George was sent off to St Mary’s Orphanage when he was seven years old. Not the best environment to raise a youngster.

The dog on the stool @ left-center makes the picture for me.

Those early years mingling with bar patrons might have been the reason he was such a people-loving gregarious guy. Then again, he might have gotten just enough of that, and needed St. Mary’s to learn self discipline. And baseball.

Anybody else surprised he was BEHIND the bar?

    • jfk69 - Jun 16, 2014 at 3:43 AM

      Better behind it,than under it.

I didn’t know Babe Ruth had a dad!

    • zdravit - Jun 14, 2014 at 7:30 PM

Some say Babe Ruth never existed…

      • yahmule - Jun 14, 2014 at 7:49 PM

“If Babe Ruth had not existed, it would have been impossible to invent him.”

Did you guys know he wasnt actually a sultan?

    • yahmule - Jun 15, 2014 at 12:23 PM

And they didn’t even have SWAT teams until the 60′s.

Is that a urinal in front of the bar? Dammit I miss the old days!.

    • proudlycanadian - Jun 14, 2014 at 8:18 PM

      Spittoon?

      • gloccamorra - Jun 14, 2014 at 8:26 PM

A long narrow spittoon? Nope, that’s a urinal. It was pretty common a hundred years ago. There’s a reason the place was decked out with flowers, to mask the stench.

      • proudlycanadian - Jun 14, 2014 at 8:32 PM

You are probably right. I do not frequent bars; so, I was just guessing.

      • kiwicricket - Jun 14, 2014 at 8:40 PM

Call it what you will….I’m peeing in it!

      • proudlycanadian - Jun 14, 2014 at 8:45 PM

Sorry to tell you, but the site is now a baseball stadium, and going in public there is frowned upon.

      • kiwicricket - Jun 14, 2014 at 11:07 PM

Depends which team it is, PC

      • nothanksimdriving123 - Jun 14, 2014 at 11:46 PM

Not sure where you’re looking, since what I see is a rail for a person to step against, perhaps knock the mud off your boots.

  6. ripwarrior - Jun 14, 2014 at 7:30 PM

    Fake.

    • kiwicricket - Jun 14, 2014 at 7:39 PM

I’m with you! We all know Ruth never went to bars.

  7. albanate - Jun 14, 2014 at 7:43 PM

I saw this photo years ago…it’s on display at the Babe Ruth House in Baltimore. An interesting little museum. I recall that they had some books there I’ve never seen for sale anywhere else.

    • sophiethegreatdane - Jun 14, 2014 at 8:05 PM

Yes! That’s right. I saw that photo there too — I thought it looked familiar, but couldn’t remember where I would have seen it. The Babe Ruth Birthplace is a cool little attraction, and a nice short walk from Camden Yards. If my memory serves me right, the bar in that picture was located where Camden Yards is now. I could be wrong about that..never fact checked it.

      Cool pic!

George H. Ruth Sr.’s bar (the one in the image) was located at 38 South Eutaw near the corner of West Lombard, site of today’s “The Goddess,” a so-called gentleman’s club: https://www.google.com/maps/@39.287603,-76.620817,3a,75y,296.52h,90.12t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sHLHjXvC48ttyozw-WrmjJg!2e0!6m1!1e1

Now you know where the phrase , “that place is going to the dogs”, comes from.
