Brewers release attack ad against Yadier Molina

Jun 17, 2014, 7:07 PM EDT

This probably won’t go over too well in St. Louis …

Dirty, dirty politics. In the latest All-Star voting update, Yadier Molina had a sizable lead among National League catchers. Jonathan Lucroy — despite boasting the highest fWAR of any major league catcher through the first two-and-a-half months of the 2014 season — was in third behind the Giants’ Buster Posey.

    Yankees suck, daddy.

    Yankees suck, sweetheart.

    • redbirdformula - Jun 18, 2014 at 10:34 AM

If we make no mention or share.. then the ad won’t get publicity. Sorry Lucroy.

      • carmar67 - Jun 18, 2014 at 2:39 PM

people get so bent out of shape over a parody ad. I’ts tongue in cheek; anybody who has viewed any Milwaukee Brewer ads over the years knows this…….(now get out there and VOTE LUCROY) :)

  2. adouglass28 - Jun 18, 2014 at 12:02 AM

Jonathan Lucroy the best catcher in MLB…said no one ever.

    • heybogey - Jun 18, 2014 at 10:10 AM

sadly they are blinded by their own stupidity,… in order for this commercial to get any air time they have to say “St. Louis Cardinal” many times,… more times than they say “Mill Walky Brooower”
so, they are smart enough to know what to say to get people’s attention,… but too dumb to realize they are advertising our (already better known and more respected ) brand name more than theirs,……

  3. jamesmfitzpatrick - Jun 18, 2014 at 12:20 AM

I guess they’re both responding well

  4. maverick8948 - Jun 18, 2014 at 12:55 AM

We all know most fans judge players on name recognition, but if you actually looked at the numbers Lucroy is far and away the best catcher in the NL this season.

    • Vyc Ðarkshådøw - Jun 18, 2014 at 1:33 AM

Are you including defensive numbers too, such as Caught Stealing %, CERA (Catcher’s ERA, basically what a pitcher’s ERA would be with him behind the dish), and other defensive stats?

      • uwsptke - Jun 18, 2014 at 9:52 AM

A common mistake by those that assume Lucroy is an “all-hit” catcher. He’s also the best in the game at framing pitches. Look at the recent article Rosenthal put out.

      • bigmeechy74 - Jun 18, 2014 at 1:18 PM

Lol at “catcher’s ERA.” Yeah because that’s a totally legit stat

      • tiffie2ner - Jun 19, 2014 at 10:15 PM

If Lucroy and Molina were on the same team. LUCROY would make a great back up catcher

    • gummybar - Jun 18, 2014 at 10:37 AM

This long-time Cub fan agrees, Lucroy is performing like an all-star so far this season. This is not to take anything away from Yadier. They both deserve all-star recognition . Loyalties aside I would give the edge to Jonathon this year.

    • campupr2000 - Jun 19, 2014 at 9:38 AM

Lucroy who? Who is this Lucroy guy? Another Brewers doper? He doesn’t even quailfy to tight Molina’s cleats. Suck it.

    • tiffie2ner - Jun 19, 2014 at 10:14 PM

If Lucroy and Molina were on the same team. LUCROY would make a great back up catcher

  5. johnnyb1976 - Jun 18, 2014 at 3:36 AM

Both catchers have one thing in common.

They can’t catch Billy Hamilton stealing.

    The Reds are coming.

    • harper461 - Jun 18, 2014 at 8:52 AM

Too bad Hamilton can’t steal first.

      • fister30 - Jun 18, 2014 at 12:52 PM

Look at his last few games. Seems to me he’s beginning to figure this offense thing out.

  6. hanous1960 - Jun 18, 2014 at 3:39 AM

Lucroy wouldn’t make a wart on Yadi’s butt!! The ad will make no difference in who the NL allstar starting catcher will be, Molina hands down!!

  7. lanthony33 - Jun 18, 2014 at 8:30 AM

Im a cards fan and this is hilarious. Brewers must not remember what happened when nyjer morgan talked trash in 2011. Bet fans thought they were world series bound tillthey ran into a real champ in the championship series. and do i really need to bring up 1982? How bout brewers fans worry about something that REALLY matters. a world series ring. worry about holding the cards off. not a damn all star vote.

  8. harper461 - Jun 18, 2014 at 8:51 AM

The All Star game is nothing more than a popularity contest. Lucroy may be having a better season offensively but he’s hardly “far and away the best catcher” as some morons have stated. There’s a reason he’s 3rd in the voting and will probably stay there. Nobody outside of the NL Central knows who he is. Brewers fans still butthurt from 2011.

    • uwsptke - Jun 18, 2014 at 9:54 AM

Please look at Lucroy’s defensive stats and get back to me. He’s been the most complete catcher in the league, and absolutely deserves to start the ASG over Molina.

      • harper461 - Jun 18, 2014 at 9:59 AM

Too bad none of it matters. Like I said, it’s hard to win a popularity contest when you’re a no name player playing for a team that perennially struggles to make the playoffs. Think about AL fans going to games and filling out their All Star ballots. They’ve never heard of Lucroy so naturally they’re going to pick Molina or Posey based on name recognition. Irony: Brewers put out an ad with a crying baby in the background while their fans are the ones doing the crying.

      • swbaseball2 - Jun 18, 2014 at 11:09 AM

Where has Lucroy been in years past? If he’s the most complete catcher why hasn’t he been good every other season? How do we not know he’s just having a lucky season like so many players do these days.Yadi is and always will be the best catcher in the NL.

      • uwsptke - Jun 18, 2014 at 2:21 PM

First, you do realize that the ASG is supposed to honor the best players for the current season, right? That’s Lucroy. Secondly, Lucroy has been in the top third of catchers since his second year. But he plays in Milwaukee, so nobody notices.

If Molina were putting up that stat line, wouldn’t you be clamoring for him to be named the league MVP?

      • harper461 - Jun 18, 2014 at 2:32 PM

You continue to look at what you wish the ASG was, and not unfortunately, what it is. I’m not discounting anything you’re saying. Lucroy, by the numbers, is having a better offensive season than Molina. Casual fans outside of the NL Central don’t know who he is and because his numbers aren’t eye-popping the mainstream media doesn’t care. It will be very hard for him get enough votes.

  9. sportsdrenched - Jun 18, 2014 at 9:14 AM

That is spectacular. I think MLB needs more of this gamesmanship.

  10. bfunk1978 - Jun 18, 2014 at 10:04 AM

I’m a Cardinals fan and I think it’s brilliant. Too many teams (and their fans) take themselves too seriously. I’ll be glad to stick my foot in my mouth unknowingly, but I think if Cardinals fans are offended or put off by this, they should grow a sense of humor.

    • tridecagon - Jun 18, 2014 at 10:29 AM

Yeah, also a Cards fan and this is hilarious. From the crying baby to the goofy Wisconsin accent to the implication that there’s nothing worse than playing for the Cardinals… it’s awesome.

      • swmocardsfan - Jun 18, 2014 at 2:39 PM

Agree. Cards fan myself (obviously) and this is awesome. I am sure Yadi got a chuckle out of it. You don’t see “ads” like this directed at horrible players, so it is almost a tongue in cheek compliment to Molina. I’ll toss a couple votes Lucroy’s way just for the effort.

    • gostlcards5 - Jun 19, 2014 at 1:12 PM

I agree also. I do think the ad is funny, although as someone else said above, I more thought the placement of the crying baby in the ad made it look bad for the Brewers/Lucroy (like they are crying).

Either way, kudos to Lucroy for the season he’s having, and to pissy Cardinals fans, get over it. Learn to laugh at something that’s funny instead of being perpetually offended.

  11. gummybar - Jun 18, 2014 at 10:51 AM

It adds to the entertainment value of the sport and is intended to get anal baseball fans into a froth. So just laugh, move on, and buy your Brewer and Cardinal paraphernalia. As a Cun fan I am horribly jealous of both Cardinals and Brewers teams because you have the better catchers, pitchers and whole teams for that matter. I have always secretly admired Moliina and Lucroy is turning into “the little engine that could.”
Lets give it to the little engine this year.

  12. pcsucks420 - Jun 18, 2014 at 12:25 PM

I find it pretty pathetic that Lucroy has to beg for votes

  13. extavernmouse - Jun 18, 2014 at 12:36 PM

This is friggin’ hilarious! They captured the tone of a political ad perfectly, in both the Lucroy and Gomez ads. The “I approve this message” at the end? For those of you who aren’t active in your democracy, that’s a rule on all campaign ads so that candidates can’t say they didn’t know what their ads were saying.

The people who don’t like it either don’t pay attention to politics and/or don’t have a sense of humor. Remember, it’s only a game!

  14. mcnabsalespro1 - Jun 18, 2014 at 1:40 PM

Is this for real? Sorry Milwaukee, Lucroy is not the best catcher, nor will he ever be! It’s not about who edges who on paper. It’s about reputation! Think Barry Bonds, David Ortiz, Derek Jeter, or (since this isn’t about bias) even Ozzie Smith would have so many all star appearances if it was about being the best all around every year? It’s about a man that leads his team into October, year after year! A man that will go down as one of the (if no THE) GOAT at his position! If Lucroy spent less time digging through Braun’s pill bottle & more time polishing Yadi’s platinum glove(s) (yes plural, as he has 2 of only 3 ever handed out in the NL) he might learn how to be feared throughout the league too!

  15. stlhavoc - Jun 18, 2014 at 2:03 PM

As a cardinals fan i say thank you!!! You have shaken the cage of a sleeping giant!!!!

  16. ggarland2014 - Jun 18, 2014 at 6:00 PM

Come on Milwaukee. Grow up. St. Louis has the Cardinals and 11 World Series and Milwaukee has….umm…..Milwaukee has…..has…..the PACKE…..(no, that’s Green Bay). Milwaukee has the BUC…..(no, they had a .183 winning percentage this year, a rate that would make the Cubs embarrassed)…OK, Milwaukee has……LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY!!!!

    so THERE!!!!

    • bfunk1978 - Jun 20, 2014 at 4:20 PM

Don’t you talk about LaVerne and Shirley!

  17. akgobears - Jun 19, 2014 at 10:48 AM

Millionairs playing a kids game and having a pissy fit contest…… must be tough for these clowns

  18. starsabre42 - Jun 20, 2014 at 12:24 AM

    Here is an audio response:

  19. johngalt2020 - Jun 20, 2014 at 6:43 PM

An absolutely pathetic and classless act on the part of the Brewers.
