The Orioles sign Clay Rapada

Clay Rapada hasn’t pitched in the bigs since last September. Indeed, he only pitched four games all last season and they were all in September. But he does throw with this left arm, and when you do that you’re never really dead in baseball. That’s about Rapada too: the Orioles have signed him to a minor league deal.

It’s lefties or nothing for Rapada, who kills ‘em. Meanwhile, right-handed hitters are basically all Albert Pujols-in-his-prime against him. Overall, he’s got a 4.06 ERA in 93 major league innings for five teams.

Here’s a clue, if the Yankees cut a lefty loose, he’s pretty much a batting practice pitcher, or at the very best a mop up pitcher in blow outs.

Here’s another clue, if you sign a guy who makes right hand hitters look like Pujols in their prime, do not send him out to face right hand hitters. A lesson that Mike Matheny and Randy Choate need to review, again….

This year Choate, LH hitters, .118/.238/.206/.444 (40 PAs), RH hitters .419/.471/.484/.955 (34 PAs), the three years prior LH .161/.239/.231/.470 (255 ABs) RH .276/.418/.347/.765 (98 ABs).

The O’s already have a lefty specialist. But If you’re going to pitch for Buck Showalter, damn it, you’re going to face lefties AND righties! So lefty specialist Brian Matusz has faced more righties than lefties and has a .304/.403/.571 against them. Yay OriLOLes!

      You spelled Orioles wrong.

He pitched a few innings for the Os in 2011 if I remember correctly. Maybe him and Matusz can battle it out for whichever LOOGY sucks the least.
