VIDEO: Brock Holt saves Jonny Gomes with a diving catch

Jun 17, 2014, 9:21 PM EDT

Red Sox super utilityman Brock Holt came out of nowhere to make a leaping catch on this ball that left fielder Jonny Gomes lost in the twilight Tuesday night at Fenway Park …

Holt, batting leadoff for Boston, scored a run in the first inning on a Dustin Pedroia double and another run in the third on a Xander Bogaerts sac fly. The 26-year-old has a surprising .338/.378/.464 slash line.

Holt has been great so far. The Sox should give him a raise, just not Scherzer money.

There was a light in the darkness and it was Holt

Remember how everyone was on the Sox for “losing” the Hanrahan/Melancon trade? Well, the Sox got holt in that deal as well….and none of the other guys that went to the Pirates have been useful. The only one to play for the MLB team or even remain with the organization is Pimentel.

Melancon is still with the Pirates and last pitched on Friday.

I know….that is why I said “other guys”, meaning other than Hanrahan and Melancon.

Holt just turned 26 and while not as good as he has been hitting, he’s a line drive hitter with a good approach at the plate and is versatile (although not great) in the field with some value on the bases. Melancon has been crazy good for the Pirates the last 2 years, but when all of the contributions are tallied when the players involved are done, the trade will probably be pretty close in value.

I think by “everyone” you mean tbuck. And that poor delusional soul does not speak for the rest of us.

“The fact that Brock Holt made a great play proves that I’m right.” — TBuck, I assume

      • unclemosesgreen - Jun 18, 2014 at 9:05 AM

The fact that they’ve called this kid up and haven’t given him his very own position to play is just ruining his confidence. Just like they ruined JB Jr.’s confidence by trying to find other OF’s to compete with him.

When will we think of the children??

      • 18thstreet - Jun 18, 2014 at 9:11 AM

Right. 4th in games played behind Pedroia, Papi, and Xander.

They clearly aren’t giving him a chance to prove himself.

I remember. Because they lost it. Holts play this year included, they still lost that deal.

The other recent trade for a closer (Gagne) was even worse for the Sox

      • 18thstreet - Jun 18, 2014 at 9:09 AM

Yeah, back in 2007 they made a TERRIBLE trade. It took them seven games to win the ALCS as a result. And also the World Series.

Look, Gagne was a disaster. But he wasn’t brought in to be a closer. Papelbon was the closer. He pitched 19 innings. Looking at his game log, he blew exactly three games, one of which was September 18, when there were only 10 games left in the season. I think we can all get over it.

If it wasn’t for the fact that the Sox easily won that trade you might have a point, but you don’t.

If only Gomes had a longer beard he might have caught that one. Or if he was actually a half decent fielder. Either one…

  8. matt14gg - Jun 18, 2014 at 6:29 AM

Best part of this is that even when Gomes screwed up he basically tried to take credit for Holt’s catch (see his quotes on the WEEI website) after the game…this guy is absolutely insufferable.

    • unclemosesgreen - Jun 18, 2014 at 9:01 AM

Really? Because I thought he was being self-effacing while still busting on a rookie. I thought it was funny.

Hated to see Holt go, But Melancon was a huge reason we made the playoffs last year. So Win Win.
