Out since mid-May with a shoulder injury, Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez is off the disabled list and will start tonight against the Astros.

Gonzalez ended up missing exactly one month with inflammation in his shoulder and returns after a pair of minor-league rehab starts–one good and one pretty ugly.

Prior to being shut down he started nine games with a 4.62 ERA, but his 53/20 K/BB ratio was much closer to his career norms and suggested the 28-year-old two-time All-Star pitched better than the bloated ERA indicated.

His ERA was actually below three before his last two starts before going on the DL, which were both absolutely awful. So it’s fair to say that before the shoulder inflammation started, he was already doing very well.

It’ll be nice and hot tonight, which should help make Miamian Gio comfortable.
