VIDEO: Hunter Pence hits an awkward upper-deck blast

Jun 22, 2014, 11:41 AM EDT

As only Hunter Pence can do. MLB.com has the highlight

Pence looked off balance as the pitch came in, but he righted himself quickly for a 440-foot bomb.

The 31-year-old right fielder is batting .299/.367/.483 with 11 home runs and 29 RBI in 75 games this season for the Giants, who have a four-game lead over the Dodgers in the National League West standings.

I don’t know. I think it is just that Pence always looks awkward.

That was fantastic hitting, got his foot down early, recognized it as an off-speed pitch, kept his weight back, and crushed it.

Ummmmmm, don’t all of his swings look like that?

    Love that guy……

    Shrugs. Not seeing anything unusual.

Huh? Doesn’t seem awkward to me.

Have to agree that it didn’t look awkward. He may have taken a little bigger load up and stride than some, so that it looked more like a slow pitch softball swing, but didn’t really look awkward at all.

Of course it was awkward. That’s what Pence does. He’s been great in SF. Plays everyday, great in the clubhouse, good defense, and hits well in all statistical categories. He’s been hitting in the No. 2 hole for most of the season to help Bochy fill out the rest of the lineup with Scutaro gone. That long term deal he signed is working out for both sides. These are his peak performance years.

This guy has the Jim Furyk version of a baseball swing. Hideous to watch but gets it done

Agree with the others-nothing unusual at all.

Awkward? I’ll take that swing any day of the week. Now Aaron Rowand, that’s awkward…

That was actually one of Pence’s more compact and fundamentally sound swings. Watch him swing and miss at an outside slider sometime. Now that’s awkward. If only I could be that awkward as well.
