We have reached Peak Brandon in Major League Baseball

I mentioned this in the recaps this morning, bit it’s worth its own mention: we have reached Peak Brandon in Major League Baseball.

I’ve been meaning to look at this all season, having noticed that the Giants are fat with Brandons, complete with the Belt, Crawford and Hicks models. If Brandon Wood hadn’t been a major league bust the Giants coulda traded for him and had the elusive all-Brandon infield. So close.

But it’s not just the Giants. I went to Baseball-Reference.com and counted 41 Brandons who have played major league baseball (I didn’t count guys with Brandon as a middle name who showed up). Twenty-two of them are currently active. Another 15 of them were active no later than 2004. That’s in the entire history of Major League Baseball.

Probably also worth noting that we’re at Peak C.J. too, as five C.J.s have played major league baseball in its history, with four of them currently active (and one, Nitkowski, broadcasting). Two of them play for the Angels (Wilson and Cron).

I’m sure this is all tied up in the general popularity of names, which means we’ll likely have a lot of Aidens playing baseball in a decade or two. But I do find it rather fun. As do the Giants, who are having fun with it this weekend:

Oh, and if you’re curious.

(thanks to Jen for the heads up on the All-Brandon Weekend)

    Blame Brandon Walsh?

    • infieldhit - Jun 23, 2014 at 12:05 PM

Shouldn’t there be a bunch of Dylans also?

      • rmalmstrom - Jun 23, 2014 at 12:26 PM

Only 2 in the Majors. Tons in the minors though.

The 2012 Pirates went with the “All-Irish” team.

    McCutchen, Andrew

    McDonald, James
    McGehee, Casey
    McKenry, Michael
    McPherson, Kyle

      Irish or Scottish?

      • jtpercell - Jun 23, 2014 at 12:17 PM

        Scottish.
        Mc/Mac:Scottish::O':Irish

Ugh, so much fail on my part.

There are plenty of Irish surnames that being with “Mc” or “Mac.” It’s not exclusively a Scottish prefix.

They should’ve hired Bake McBride as a coach.

Just think how many Taylor and Tylers there’ll be in 20 years.

And then the Tanners and Taydens will take over.

White people flock to trendy names like….well….like white people flock to trendy everything.

    • historiophiliac - Jun 23, 2014 at 12:27 PM

      Whatever, Cody.

      • tfbuckfutter - Jun 23, 2014 at 12:46 PM

        Shut up, Heather.

The thing that really cracks me up is the regional differences. There are names that tend to be common in parts of the country but not in others. When we moved back east, people there could not seem to get my ex’s name and it’s common in the west and south. We always had to correct people on it. On the other hand, you never see a Siobhan or Rufus around here.

Brandon kicked Brenden’s ass as convicingly as Brett whipped Brent.

I’m getting tired of kids named Jordan. If you have a kid named Jordan, no offense, but seriously screw that name.

Overall, Carlin is very funny, but here he comes off as a man stuck in the past. He wouldn’t have done this routine in the 70s, lamenting the dearth of Henrys and Ralphs.

      • infieldhit - Jun 23, 2014 at 1:25 PM

He’d be lamenting the dearth of Georges now.

      • yahmule - Jun 23, 2014 at 2:37 PM

Would anybody’s act be the same 30-40 years ago? Carlin’s certainly wasn’t. He evolved as a performer throughout his career. For all the social commentary George did in the final stage of his career, like any other comedian, he simply said a lot of stuff just for laughs. Nobody really believes a person as smart as George would make any kind of actual judgments on a person based just on their name.

I think we’re headed for an era of “Joshua” dominance.

With Belt on the DL, I’ve really missed the Brandon to Brandon to Brandon double play combo. Of course, soon we’ll have Brandon PANIK Brandon, so it’s all good.

never met a Siobhan until A few years back. A minute later she introduced me to her girlfriend Siobhan. they had just met. I once had four Kristens work for me at once. of course they were all spelled differently.
