    “The biggest difference is the defense behind him …” I disagree. According to Baseball Info Solutions, the organization that best measures defense, the Tigers in 2013 were 66 runs worse than average. Roughly halfway through 2014, the Tigers are 37 runs worse than average on defense, just about the same.

    I agree that Porcello’s much lower batting average on balls in play (and to a lesser extent his HR per flyball) explains the improvement, but we don’t know whether that’s due to defense (maybe the Tigers just happen to play good defense when Porcello pitches this year) or weak contact. Regardless, it tends not to be very sustainable.
