Yankees designated hitter Carlos Beltran has been scratched from tonight’s lineup against the Indians after a ball he hit during batting practice bounced up and struck him near the eye.

No further word yet on the severity of the injury, but manager Joe Girardi has shifted Derek Jeter to the DH spot and Brendan Ryan is at shortstop for the newly acquired Brandon McCarthy‘s debut.

Beltran has been limited to DH duties due to season-long elbow problems that may require surgery and recently he’s also been dealing with a knee issue. At age 37 he’s hit just .216 with nine homers and a .671 OPS in the first season of a three-year, $45 million deal.

Is that the hardest he’s hit the ball in a week?

Why is it mlb players can’t play with half of the things that happen when you are younger while playing baseball it’s really pathetic I’m just saying

I don’t know if I understand this stream of stuff. But it’s not obvious from the short report what happened to Beltran. They might want to check for a concussion. There might be a lot of swelling. Maybe you played with one eye swollen shut. I got hit in the eye when I was playing as a kid and they took me out of the game and checked it out. I don’t think that’s babying somebody.

Very classy player and person. He is loved in stl. Glad he got big money in NY, but time, injuries and bag luck are tough to beat. Cards fans wish him well….even in NY.
