Yadier Molina to miss 8-12 weeks with a torn thumb ligament

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina sprained his thumb last night on an awkward slide into third base. He underwent an to determine the severity of the injury. The verdict: severe. Molina has a torn ligament in his right thumb. He will have surgery and will miss 8-12 weeks, the team announced a few minutes ago.

Molina was hitting .287/.341/.409 with 16 doubles and seven home runs when he went down. That’s off the pace of where he’s been the past couple of years, but it’s still excellent production, and that’s before you factor in the fact that he is, bar none, the best catcher in all of baseball. This is a tremendous blow for the Cardinals, who have had the luxury of Molina’s outstanding work, almost uninterrupted, for the past decade.

In his place: Tony Cruz and Audry Perez. At least for now. If the Cardinals are looking to get a veteran presence to take Molina’s place or back either Cruz or Perez up, both John Buck and A.J. Pierzynski were DFA’d this week.

Not that either of them are a substitute for Yadi. Heck, you could stack all four of those guys on top of one another and they wouldn’t measure up to Yadi.

Hell, I was thinking Bryce Harper when I first heard about this. Well, that kind of screws the pooch.

    • SocraticGadfly - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:17 PM

I’ll also say this means that, as a precaution, Wacha stays on the shelf for the rest of the season, since, on Yadi, the long end, of 12 weeks, is itself the rest of the season.

Hey, the original post was disappointment, not glee; the second’s just a reasonable guesstimate of Mo being cautionary … no need to thumbs0down that.

Its not the end of the world, Cruz can call a good game. Molina’s bat wasn’t doing much. Sucks though no doubt. My favorite player.

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 10, 2014 at 8:18 PM

Uhh, sorry, but, I have to agree with David Schoenfield at ESPN, who noted that “Cruz is the definition of a replacement-level player.”

Well, the bizarro season just another turn for the worse.

Just say no to Pierzynski Mo..

Suzuki, (other) Molina, Sanchez, Hannigan, Buck maybe?

Who the hell knows at this point….

Wrong sport for this, but all I could think of was:

  4. sdelmonte - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:14 PM

This week has been brutal for injuries, hasn’t it?

  5. drewnichols81 - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:14 PM

This team will rally around Tony “Kurt Warner” Cruz and it will play good baseball

So Torn Thumb Ligaments are the new Tommy John Surgeries?

  7. stlouis1baseball - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:17 PM

Sonofabitch! And on a hustle play no less.
A.C…. you better buy his dinners the rest of the damn year.
He is the reason you made a “productive” out. A “productive” out that results in the heart and soul of the team being out for the rest of freaking year!
    Unbelievable. Just….just…ugh.

    • paperlions - Jul 10, 2014 at 6:00 PM

Yeah, I was blaming Craig too….knowing it isn’t really reasonable, but Craig has been so brutal lately…then this happens in part because Craig can’t do anything but ground out to the 3B or SS.

      • stlouis1baseball - Jul 10, 2014 at 6:14 PM

Yep. Pretty much where I am as well Paper.
Hell…I blamed him last night immediately afterwards.
I rewound the play and made the Wife and kids watch it numerous times. The Wife didn’t mind (she routinely calls Yadi “husband #2”), but the girls were moaning about it. You know when he comes out mid game there are serious issues. Unbelievable.

    • gibbyfan - Jul 10, 2014 at 7:48 PM

We have to take a positive perspective on this..yes, it’s a huge blow but they are starting to hit better as a team now and most importantly it sounds like we will have him back for the PS. Plus I think TC might just surprise us a little.

      • stlouis1baseball - Jul 11, 2014 at 9:50 AM

8 weeks seems very aggressive to me. The thumb is critically important. He has to be able to swing the bat. Can’t do it without both thumbs. 12 weeks puts him into mid October. He is done for the year. They need to sign Buck…and do it now.

  8. cincinata - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Well, they still have a potent ball club, however Molina is the guy who usually is a thorn in the Reds side. It may be a different tune for the next series with the birds. I like the Reds chances without Molina in the game. In fact, I like the chances for the Pirates and Brewers with the injuries to 4 Reds starters and the injuries to the cards. We just lost Phillips for a time. I think Hamilton may b back sooner.

    • okwhitefalcon - Jul 10, 2014 at 6:18 PM

      Making this a Reds thread?

      Thumbs down.

  9. unlost1 - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:28 PM

Game over for an already fragile Cardinal club.

  10. whatacrocker - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:29 PM

I’d say it’s a “tough, tough tear” more than a “tough, tough break.”

  11. emdash01 - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:32 PM

I think we’re at the point where we have to consider banning hustle.

    • SocraticGadfly - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:36 PM

      Grit, too?

Guess Lucroy will be taking over in the All Star Game. Is everyone happy NOW ???

  13. tmc602014 - Jul 10, 2014 at 4:54 PM

If Mozeliak does look outside, let’s remember that AJ got anonymously kicked in the ass on the way out the door while Buck’s ex teammates were crying into their socks.

“He underwent an to determine the severity of the injury”

An what, Craig? AN WHAT?? TELL ME DAMMIT

  15. disgracedfury - Jul 10, 2014 at 6:28 PM

How can anyone injure themselves sliding into bases. All these dumb injuries on fundamental plays is crazy. If you can’t slide like Pete Rose than don’t slide.

  16. stlbirds21 - Jul 10, 2014 at 6:38 PM

Here are some catchy phrases for Cruz
Teams are Cruzin for a Brusin
    We can’t lose with Cruz
    Teams will snooze of Cruz
And my favorite…the fans will be drinking a lot of boos because of Cruz

  17. stlbirds21 - Jul 10, 2014 at 6:39 PM

    Teams will snooze on Cruz*

  18. moogro - Jul 10, 2014 at 8:49 PM

Canvas bases and firm-webbed base running gloves are the new market efficiency.

  19. missingdiz - Jul 10, 2014 at 8:52 PM

Everybody on the team has to step up now. It’s a character check.
