Position player pitching alert! Rangers catcher Chris Gimenez tossed a 1-2-3 inning

Jul 11, 2014, 10:47 AM EDT

I love position players pitching and I think you do too, so here’s Rangers backup catcher Chris Gimenez tossing a scoreless, 1-2-3 inning against the Angels last night.

Oh, and he even struck out a pretty good hitter in C.J. Cron!

According to Pitch-F/X he topped out at 87.6 miles per hour and threw 11 fastballs out of 12 pitches, working in one changeup.

The look on Darvish’s face after the K made me chuckle.

Couldn’t be any worse than the “real” pitchers they sent out there that were getting hit to death.

    That’s how bad we suck

Reminds me of when Whitey Herzog ran out of pitchers in an extra inning game against the Braves and used Jose Oquendo. Oquendo pitched three scoreless innings before he gave up 2 runs in the 19th.

Herzog quipped that the Cardinals had surrendered in the 16th inning but the Braves took 4 innings to accept.

Reminds me of the 2005 Astros-Braves playoff series. The Astros won the series on Chris Burke’s homer in the bottom of the 18th, Game 4.

Phil Garner had used up the Astros’ bench and bullpen. His last pitcher, Roger Clemens, pitched the 16th-18th innings. Note that Clemens entered the game as a pinch-hitter. The announcers noted that if there was going to be a 19th inning, RF Jason Lane would pitch and Clemens would play OF.

    See the box score in

Fast forward 9 seasons. Jason Lane has pitched twice for the Padres in 2014. As an actual pitcher, not as an outfielder making a pitching appearance.

One qualifier: Angels hitters were very tired at that point.

Most inventive ideas Wash has had this year using Moreland and Gimenez. Let’s see what all the other position players can do to get the Rangers through 8 innings!
