Tyler Clippard, Alfredo Simon, and Tim Hudson added to National League All-Star roster

Jul 13, 2014, 3:42 PM EDT

Some late substitutions here for the National League All-Star roster …

Tyler Clippard owns a 2.03 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 40 innings this season. He’s replacing Jordan Zimmermann — who has a biceps strain — as the Nationals’ only participant in the All-Star Game.

Tim Hudson boasts an outstanding 2.83 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 18 starts this season at age 38. He is replacing Madison Bumgarner, who became ineligible to pitch in Tuesday night’s All-Star Game when he was named the Giants’ starter for Sunday afternoon’s first-half finale against the Diamondbacks.

Alfredo Simon finished his first half with a 12-3 record, 2.70 ERA, and 1.05 WHIP in 18 starts for the Reds after spending much of his career as a reliever. He’s filling in for Johnny Cueto, who started Sunday.

Between guys named who can play, guys named who can’t due to injury, guys named who can’t because they are scheduled to pitch on Sunday, and guys named who can’t because they have to fix their Florida fireplace or some such (Yes, it happened, and the guy got away with it because he was a “superstar”), “All-Star” is descending to the low level of cache usually reserved for “Pro Bowl”.

Give the fans Stephen Strasburg or Jake Arrieta

I wouldn’t put those two in the same breath.

Is Shelby Miller the emergency pitcher?

I thought Henderson Alvarez replaced Zimmermann?

    • natstowngreg - Jul 13, 2014 at 7:35 PM

Alvarez did replace Zimmermann. Clippard replaced Julio Teheran (started today).

Drew is correct. Zimmermann’s loss left the Nats without a player in the game, until Clippard was added.

Hudson should politely decline and get some rest and be better prepared for th second half.

    • joelgold - Jul 13, 2014 at 8:05 PM

Hudson is pitching great, just hasn’t gotten run support lately. He doesn’t need rest, he needs to experience the All Star Game another time, because at 38 it probably won’t happen again. He will do will in the second half even after the stress of flying to Minnesota and pitching an inning, maybe.

Next thing you know they’ll name me to the all-star game

  9. genericcommenter - Jul 13, 2014 at 10:02 PM

There you go, Cashman haters! Looks like he developed another All Star player.

    • tuberippin - Jul 14, 2014 at 2:32 AM

Brian Cashman? Meh…he’s had his hits (Cano, Soriano, Mike Lowell, Hughes, Melky, AJax, Gardner, Nova, Wang, Clippard, Betances, Robertson, Melancon), but he’s also had his misses (Eric Duncan, Jesus Montero, Andrew Brackman, Wily Mo Pena, Drew Henson, Brandon Weeden, Adrian Hernandez, CJ Henry, Dan McCutchen).

That, and a whole lot of filler (Joba, Ian Kennedy, Jake Westbrook, Juan Rivera, Francisco Cervelli, Jose Tabata, Solarte, Eduardo Nunez, Ramiro Pena, Ricky Ledee, Sean Henn, Phil Coke, Zach McAllister, Dioner Navarro, D’Angelo Jimenez, Hector Noesi).

      • genericcommenter - Jul 14, 2014 at 9:07 AM

Yeah, I know. I was just responding to the people who constantly post that he’s never drafted or developed a single major league player, and they don’t count guys like Cano simply because they weren’t drafted.

Rendon not making the game is why I won’t be watching. Kids is amazing

  11. spyder9669 - Jul 13, 2014 at 11:05 PM

Simon already said he would refuse if selected to go as an injury replacement. So who is replacing him? Gotta be my man Tim Lincecum. He is beasting right now.
