Must-click link: Whatever happened to Tom Emanski?

Jul 18, 2014, 2:41 PM EDT

If you watched ESPN from the mid-90s to the late oughts, you certainly know who Tom Emanski is. At least you know the name, which was applied to his line of youth baseball instructional videos. The ones which boasted of Emanski coaching “back-to-back-to-back AAU Champion.” The ones which featured extremely satisfying shots of ballplayers fielding outfield grounders and firing them into garbage cans placed at home plate. The ones in which Fred McGriff gave his “full endorsement.”

Why were those commercials so ubiquitous on ESPN back then? Why did they suddenly stop? What the heck ever happened to Tom Emanski and, come to think about it, who the hell was Tom Emanski anyway?

Erik Malinowski of Fox has a big story about those videos and the man behind them. If you’ve ever seen and wondered about those commercials and those videos, you should go check it out.

In 2011… I met Tom Emanski while shark fishing in South Africa.

At the time… he said he was designing shark cages made from a new type of highly shock resistant clear plastic glass.

    Nice guy.
Travels with two very attractive, voluptuous Puerto Rican women.

In one of you All Star game posts, you mentioned his doppelgänger Schmo Emanski, so I figured he was alive and well.

Tom Emanski is the Bill Braski of Baseball.

The Tom Emanski commercials and the Sears commercial with the wife nagging her husband about getting air conditioning are two of my most lasting television moments from the 90s.

Did Emanski ever make a video on how to be a baseball GM? Did it speak to odd and obscure items such as on base percentage? If so, can you please have one sent to the offices of one Ruben Amaro? Bill it to “Phillies fans across the globe”.

I bought his video when I coached Little League. I now umpire, there is always a parent or coach yelling at their kid to keep the elbow up. I cringe every time I hear that. Tom taught me that’s incorrect.

This was an interesting article, but the only thing we found out about what happened to Tom Emanski is that he basically just went away..
