Astros players upset over Mark Appel’s promotion to Double-A, bullpen session in Houston

Mark Appel, the first overall pick in the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft, was promoted to Double-A Corpus Christi on Saturday despite posting a 9.74 ERA and 1.92 WHIP in 44 1/3 innings at High-A Lancaster. And he was invited to Minute Maid Park in Houston on Sunday morning to throw a bullpen session in front of Astros coaches and executives. This stuff is not sitting well with some of the players on the Astros’ current major league roster. Here’s reporter Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle

It’s pretty common for top prospects to be moved aggressively through the minors and to have workouts in front of members of the major league coaching staff, so this anger seems odd. Perhaps it’s the culmination of a growing divide between the Houston front office and some of the Astros’ players — the shady handling of George Springer‘s callup and the bungling of the Brady Aiken negotiations only adding fuel to the fire.

“I will handle those conversations internally,” Astros manager Bo Porter told Ortiz on Sunday afternoon. “Any time something affects your clubhouse, I think as the manager you have to handle it.”

Let’s see lowbrow Porter try & wiggle his way out of this one. Every day it’s something new w/ this guy.

How was this any of his fault?

C’mon, OG. You know Nottingham by now. Porter is black. It has to be his fault.

The thing that is a little over looked by those current Astros that are upset by the promotion is that its not uncommon to have pitchers skip the Cal League all together (Folty skipped it!). Hader does deserve a AA promotion. Appel is getting one for two reasons and lowly old fan that I am – I saw this coming. First he finally had an “expected quality start” and second, I think everyone in the Astros brass is pretty sure they should have sent him to Corpus instead of Lancaster to begin with. The chance to put two 1-1 picks on the same team is why he went there (marketing) most likely. I expect him to do very well is the Texas League, same with Hader when he gets his chance.

The fact that a team that scored 4 runs in 3 games against MIA had people upset about this bothers me a whole lot though – seems they may not be paying attention to what they should be!

Seems like the beat writer is trying to stir up something.

Lancaster is a joke for a ball park. They needed to get him out of there. Although I agree that Hader should be promoted, I can see Appel returning to form in Corpus.

Buh, buh, but – NOLAN RYAN is with the Astros now, how could anything possibly be going wrong with the organization? Don’t you people know that once The Legend(tm) joins a team’s front office everything magically starts working and there’s clubhouse harmony & sh *t just because of His presence?
