A’s lose Craig Gentry to broken hand, call up speedster Billy Burns

A’s outfielder Craig Gentry began the season on the disabled list with a back injury and now, after hitting just .264 with zero homers and a .625 OPS in 80 games, he’s going on the shelf again with a broken right hand.

Coco Crisp is also currently banged up and could end up needing a disabled list stint of his own for ongoing beck problems, so the A’s have called up Double-A center fielder Billy Burns.

Burns, who was acquired from the Nationals this winter in exchange for left-hander Jerry Blevins, hit just .250 with one homer and a .662 OPS in 91 games at Double-A. However, despite not getting on base much Burns did swipe 51 bases while being caught just five times, so he fills Gentry’s role as a defensive-minded speedster.

Adding insult to injury, pun intended in not completely apropos replay showed that he was pulling the bunt back and the ball hit him on the hand off the bat, but wasn’t awarded 1B on it.

Is Crisp’s issue with schlocky conservative talk radio or overrated “indie” rock?

I know the author is busy watching the Twins, but it’s more accurate to state that Gentry has an OPS of just .625 in part time play, he has been a havoc on the base paths (18 for 19) and provided the Athletics with excellent defense when Coco was injured or giving one of the many Oakland players who have logged time in the oufield this year some much needed rest by logging a time in all three outfield spots. His season isn’t nearly as cruddy as the author makes it sound and Burns is playing everyday, hence the 50 plus steals. Gentry isn’t just getting DL’d to make space to see if someone more productive can, he’ll be missed, a ton, and has been playing pretty banged up for most of the year.
