Rays activate Joel Peralta, designate Erik Bedard for assignment

Rays reliever Joel Peralta is back from the disabled list after being sidelined with what he believes was a case of chikungunya virus contracted while in the Dominican Republic and to make room for him on the roster the Rays have designated Erik Bedard for assignment.

Bedard was demoted from the rotation to the bullpen three weeks ago, but has barely pitched since then and at age 35 could be nearing the end of the line.

He still misses a decent number of bats, but Bedard has never had good control, served up 10 homers in 76 innings, and hasn’t posted an ERA better than 4.50 since 2011.

Adam Jones, George Sherrill and Chris Tillman.

Plus Kam Mickolio (who saw some ML time out of the bullpen) and Tony Butler.

Sherrill was traded for Josh Bell and Steve Johnson.

Josh Bell was traded for Mike Belfiore.

Mickolio was part of the trade for Mark Reynolds

That trade was the gift that kept on giving.

If it is the end of the line for Bedard, we Rays fans did not expect him to be great (and with a 79 ERA+ he certainly wasn’t); but he did eat a fair number of innings and thus helped bridge the holes in the pitching staff due to injuries. For that he has my thanks.

I agree with every word, raysfan1.
