Gerrit Cole throws five shutout innings in rehab start

Gerrit Cole Gerrit Cole

On the disabled list with a strained lat muscle, Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole tossed five shutout innings Monday in a minor-league rehab start at Triple-A.

He allowed five hits, striking out seven and walking three while throwing 81 pitches. That suggests he might be ready to come off the DL and rejoin the rotation, except the Pirates have indicated they’ll be patient with his timetable.

Tom Singer of MLB.com reports that making one more rehab start and then coming off the shelf on August 8 remains the most likely scenario unless last night’s outing changes the Pirates’ plans.

He is going to make one more rehab start with a target pitch count of 100 pitches and will be back up if all goes well

If the Pirates can get Gerrit Cole back and he pitches well, then it’s the like the Pirates would have added an ace at the top of the rotation.

I’m not sure that Cole qualifies as an ace but he would definitely help the pirates starting rotation

I think it’s more a function of bumping everyone down a peg to where they need to be. Liriano rolling against 2s, Morton against 3s, Locke against 4s, and Worley against 5s, Volquez to the bullpen, and Pimintel to AAA where he can work on starting,

Here is my prediction for the Bucs August – playoffs rotation:

      1) Lester
      2) Cole
      3) Liriano
      4) Morton
      5) Locke

Worley and Volquez to the pen.

      Now that’s a good rotation.
