Oakland’s training staff said Tuesday that outfielder Coco Crisp has “chronic degenerative changes in his neck” stemming from when he ran into a wall way back on May 7.

That sounds really, really bad–at least to this layman–but Crisp has avoided the disabled list so far and Joe Stiglich of CSNBayArea.com reports that he could rejoin the lineup as soon as this weekend.

Crisp has played very well since the initial injury in early May, hitting .281 with a .382 on-base percentage and .803 OPS in 52 games, but he’s batting just .208 in July and according to trainer Nick Paparesta “we’ve all come to the conclusion that it’s something we’re gonna be battling the rest of the season.”

All of us morphologically modern humans that have lived as long as Coco, or longer, have some chronic degenerative changes. That said, neck and back pain can be the worst.

It could be worse – he could be Johnny Damon. That guy is a chronic degenerate. He’s unofficially retired and running an underage margarita delivery racket.

That is rough for CoCo. He was the guy who carried the team late last year, so hopefully he can play in two-thirds of the remaining games this year.

More padding and safety on the perimeter fences makes for more exciting and safer baseball.
