ACES GALORE: The Rays trade David Price to the Tigers

Jul 31, 2014, 3:55 PM EDT

Take that, trade rumor industrial complex. No one was expecting this until about an hour ago, but now it’s official: The Tampa Bay Rays have traded David Price to the Detroit Tigers. Ken Rosenthal was the first to report the deal.

It was a three-way deal involving the Mariners as well. At the moment we know this much: The Rays will get swingman (but future full-time starter) Drew Smyly and promising 18-year-old infield prospect Willy Adames from the Tigers. The Mariners will get center fielder Austin Jackson from Detroit. The Mariners will then send infielder Nick Franklin to the Rays. Fun note: the Tigers are playing a game as we speak. When the trade was made, Austin Jackson was pulled out of center field in the middle of an at bat. Which is what you have to do, I guess.

The Tigers and the Athletics, who have met in epic playoff matchups the past two years, just made some big moves today. And, if our dreams come true, could face one another in the ALCS, with David Price, Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander and Anibal Sanchez going up against Jon Lester, Sonny Gray, Jeff Samardzija and Scott Kazmir. Oh, and Rick Porcello and Jason Hammel and two terrifying offenses are hanging around too.

As for the Mariners: Austin Jackson is an offensive upgrade, though at the moment he’s having a down year. But you have to like the deal for them on its own terms: they just turned Nick Franklin into Jackson. You make that deal seven days a week.

For the Rays: Smyly projects into a decent starting pitcher, though likely no ace. Given that there is no chance they could have re-signed Price once he hit free agency, this is probably the best of a bad situation for them.

terrible news for all Blue Jays Fans.

    • gregbeau - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:03 PM

But great news for those of us who can’t stand the Blue Jays.

    • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:52 PM

Look at the bright side. At least Price is out of the division. The Blue Jays won’t have to see him as often.

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:32 PM

        Dear Rays fans:

Teh Google of various Tigers fan and sports writer/blogger blogs?

None of them has Willy Adames as a top 10 or even top 20 on the prospects list. So, unless Andrew Friedman has eyes twice as good as the allegedly legendary ones of Dombrowski, you can officially jump off the cliff now.

      • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:41 PM

I bet you to it, my dear. You apparently didn’t click the link I posted to yahmule:

        http://www.freep.com/article/20140617/SPORTS02/306170103/detroit-tigers-prospects-willy-adames

“Regardless, Adames has a first-division starter ceiling, something that cannot be said about many Tigers positional prospects, and you should see him in the top 10 of prospect lists as early as this off-season.” Written on June 17, 2014.

        Next question?

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:50 PM

No, I saw that link below already. I just don’t buy into it.

Also, I generally refuse to use the word ‘prospect” for anybody not yet at AA.

So, again, I think Friedman whiffed; sorry, but that’s what I think.

      • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 6:22 PM

You don’t get to personally define the word prospect to suit yourself. I’m quite familiar with your writing on these message boards. For some reason, I’m going to trust Friedman and company over you.

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:24 PM

        Well, it ain’t just me.

Every big sports network/website is reporting this as some mix of “Huh” / “trade deadline losers.”

I mean, I appreciate the ardor of you and other Rays fans, but, when you’re thinking Adames, down in Single-A, will be the next Zobrist in 2 years, it’s time to take off the rose-colored glasses and put down the kool-aid.

      • indaburg - Aug 1, 2014 at 5:56 AM

It’s not just you making premature decisions? That’s nice. I’m hardly a blind homer and I’m willing to criticize my team when warranted so no kool-aid here. Friedman has earned the benefit of the doubt. It’s simply too soon to decide if this trade was a failure a few hours after the fact. Let’s see how these components perform.

  2. thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 31, 2014 at 3:57 PM

Autsin Jackson just left CF during the game, he’s part of the deal

    • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 31, 2014 at 3:58 PM

      Drew Smyly too

      • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 31, 2014 at 3:59 PM

Smyly and Nick Franklin to Tampa, Jackson to Seattle

    • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:09 PM

      Great deal for the M’s.

That said, Max Scherzer, the Tigers thank you for the rest of this year, and say goodbye after that. No way they’re paying a FA contract bigger than what he rejected PLUS Price’s $20M plus in arbitration next year.

      • historiophiliac - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:23 PM

        Shut up!

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:28 PM

Sorry, sir, but, realistically, Max rejected a 6/$144 because he’s thinking what, 7/$180? No way you’re doing that plus Price’s arb.

That said, having Price next year gives you a year of cushion.

    • rje49 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:16 PM

Always wondered why they couldn’t let a guy finish an inning, as long as nobody knew about a trade- unless of course it was 4:00.

      • tigersfandan - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:18 PM

It was getting really close to 4:00 — and maybe they wanted Jackson to get one last round of applause.

      • sportsfan18 - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:09 PM

They can’t, because however small, due to the risk of injury.

Also, one CAN’T play for a team they are not on.

      • thatsnuckinfuts - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:25 PM

        Because he could get injured

  3. bigtganks - Jul 31, 2014 at 3:57 PM

Just WOW. What a rotation. Topped the A’s.

  4. daveitsgood - Jul 31, 2014 at 3:58 PM

Ask Verlander if they made that trade because of the A’s

    • yahmule - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:00 PM

      Heh.

    • xjokerz - Jul 31, 2014 at 3:59 PM

      uhmm, no.

      Tigers traded Smyly and Jackson.

      Mariners got Ajax

      lol

    • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:18 PM

Scherzer’s going to the Bronx as a free agent next year.

      • davidpom50 - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:18 PM

        *Los Angeles

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:35 PM

Also possible. He’s very, very likely not in Detroit, though.

  8. rocketsteadman - Jul 31, 2014 at 3:59 PM

I know its still Scott Kazmir….but come on, I’d rather have Kaz start over Hammel

    • yahmule - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:02 PM

Hey, come on, Hammel has had two separate three month stretches of effective pitching in his career.

      • rocketsteadman - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:04 PM

I suppose you are right. And if you combine Kaz’s effective pitching months from his career with Hammel’s you get one solid season of productivity.

  9. Detroit Michael - Jul 31, 2014 at 3:59 PM

I’m afraid to hear what the Tigers dealt away.

Gee, that Doug Fister trade looks even worse now.

    • xjokerz - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:02 PM

Ajax and SMyly, i aint mad.

    • Detroit Michael - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:11 PM

Now hearing Willy Adames is gone. Let’s wait until we hear the final news before judging.

  10. Bob Loblaw - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:01 PM

    Tigers starters >>> A’s starters.

      • Bob Loblaw - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:11 PM

        Bob Loblaw NO habla espanol!!!

    Don’t forget Kazmir, yo

  12. djlexluger - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:01 PM

    Austin Jackson to the Mariners

  13. snipedanglecelly13 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:03 PM

Damn! Two of the best rotations in baseball right now!

  14. convincedofthehex - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:04 PM

Good luck Detroit. Price is great in regular season games, but when you really need him to shut down the opposition in the playoffs, it doesn’t happen. Post season record 1 – 4. ERA 5.06. WHIP 1.31. Good move by the Rays pending details on what they are getting back.

    • dtownbeatdown - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:07 PM

Good moves by rays pending what they get? How can you say it is a good move if you don’t even know the details. His era is 5.06, good thing we score 6 or more runs regularly.

    • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:14 PM

Small sample size. Look at his larger body of work.

      • stex52 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:52 PM

Sorry to see it Indy. Good luck with the returns. Smyly has been trying to find his way in a starting role this year. He is great as a reliever and in short outings, but he has shown a tendency to get to 100 pitches about the time he gets to 5-6 innings. Too young to say yet that he won’t get a lot better.

      • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 8:35 PM

Thanks, stex. I’m numb. Getting used to seeing our stars go away. Shields, Crawford, Price… The parade will continue.

I hope this Smyly kid pans out. What I’m reading says he has about #3 or 4 starter potential. The rest of our rotation is still pretty good. Archer has good stuff, but needs to mature emotionally. Moore will hopefully come back healthy next year from UCL surgery. Cobb is looking like his old self. Odorizzi is developing nicely.

  15. philliesblow - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:04 PM

The only downside for the Tigers is living with the defense of Rajai Davis in CF. Wonder if they bring up Ezekiel Carrera from Toledo.

    • xjokerz - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:05 PM

a philly fan talking about down side.

      now thats rich.

      • philliesblow - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:09 PM

A Philly fan? You new here?

      • sabatimus - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:32 PM

Might want to check out that handle.

    • historiophiliac - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Sheesus, I foresee some DK (ugh) and a return to Dirks shortly. :/

  16. gregbeau - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:04 PM

I don’t suppose Price will have any trouble finding a place to buy a pillowcase full of weed in Detriot?

    • senotonom205 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:43 PM

Please, Kid can just get his medical card and buy it from any local dispensary in the suburbs as well as the city!

  17. dtownbeatdown - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:05 PM

My mind is blown. World series moves today.

  18. watermelon1 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Tigers aint making it to to ALCS without some sort of fixing going on!

    • dtownbeatdown - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:09 PM

Three Cy Young winners in our rotation now… Haters going to hate.

      • Damidwesterner - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:13 PM

        And last three league MVPs.

      • asimonetti88 - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:37 PM

Don’t get too far ahead of yourselves now. Philadelphia had a very good rotation a few years back that didn’t get them all that far. The AL is very good this year. Even as talented as the Tigers are they will be facing some pretty good teams in the playoffs!

  19. yahmule - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:10 PM

The Rays are getting more than Drew Smyly and Nick Franklin, right?

    • xjokerz - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:13 PM

they rays are only getting Nick Franklin.

ESPN said Smyly / Jackson to the Mariners.

      • yahmule - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:15 PM

        Someone @ ESPN is drunk.

    • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:17 PM

You read my mind, yahmule. Smyly and Franklin? That’s it? I am not happy with this.

    • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:20 PM

That’s it. For all the talk about the high prices Friedman was wanting.

After the Cards came off the table, I think he realized his window was closing.

      • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:32 PM

        Wrong and wrong.

There is a 3rd player. A shortstop prospect, Rosenthal reports. Willy Adames.

Window closing? Friedman could have waited until the off-season with Price under control for another full year.

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:19 PM

Class A SS, far away from MLB, doesn’t sweeten the pot much, @inda. Friedman blew this one, at least per the talk about what he wanted.

      • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:28 PM

It is WAY too soon to say that Friedman blew this one. He has a pretty good track record judging by the Rays’ success since he’s taken the helm as a GM. Time will tell, oh smug one.

Although that kid is way down low on the farm, from what I’m reading, he’s performing well.

    • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:41 PM

Yahmule, MLBN also reports the Rays got a young Dominican SS prospect, Willy Adames.

      http://www.freep.com/article/20140617/SPORTS02/306170103/detroit-tigers-prospects-willy-adames

      • historiophiliac - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:16 PM

Oh, your Dominican quotient went up. You must be happy. :)

      • yahmule - Jul 31, 2014 at 8:03 PM

I hope he pans out. Friedman’s track record earns him a lot of slack.

      • indaburg - Jul 31, 2014 at 8:41 PM

That’s what I’m thinking. Honestly just looking at this deal, I’m scratching my head a bit but this isn’t the first time Friedman has made a trade that has looked odd on the surface. Under his reign, they’ve done well with little. I’ve gone from underwhelmed to perplexed (and sad to lose another great player because our fan base is small and our stadium sucks and so on) but willing to keep an open mind.

  20. huddlma - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:11 PM

“a guy who one the AL MVP and Cy Young Award a couple of years ago is now the TIgers fourth starter.”

“One”…..come on, Craig…..I know it’s been a long day but get your headlines together :)

  21. snowman69bobbysmela - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:11 PM

trading jackson was stupid, even though he is hurt get rid of that loser dirks, oh and what makes price so great? He will choke just like soria and nathan have so far. none of them are really that good. I hame a tigers fan,but trading a player like austin jackson, for price dumb move DUMBROWSKI!!!!

    • xjokerz - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:15 PM

Jackson has been HORRIBLE for 2 years dude.

and hes a free agent next year

Price is a LEGIT top 5 SP / ACE

sorry, you need to make that trade especially when you have Jd Maritnez / Davis / Hunter already in the outfield.

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:20 PM

Jackson’s not a FA until after 2015. Get a clue, read something.

    • senotonom205 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:16 PM

You know, I had a long paragraph all typed out to refute everything you just said, but I deleted it all and realized that you are just a huge troll, or you are as dumb as your typing skills indicate.

  22. hunnymoney - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:17 PM

Amazing…the Rays had arguably the most coveted arm available at the trade deadline and the best deal we can get is Drew Smyly and Nick Franklin?? Incredible…somebody please tell me why Andrew Friedman is considered a great GM again? At least tell me we got a bag of balls and bats, ’cause they’ll likely outlast both of the stiffs we got back. This is like trading a brand new Lexus for a busted up Yugo and then paying the owner of the Yugo to take the Lexus off your hands. Stupefying…is it too late to trade Friedman to the Cubs? Maybe we can get a few boxes of Wrigley’s Doublemint gum or something…

    • yahmule - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:19 PM

I think Friedman is great, but this was a terrible trade, IMO. They should have just kept Price if this was the best they could get in return. They’re only 5.5 out of the wild card and Myers is coming back soon.

      • tigersfandan - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:21 PM

        You may be underrating Smyly.

      • Paper Lions - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:20 PM

Doubt, Smyly has been about a league average pitcher as a starter and the 105 IP he has this year is already a career high. That’s fine, but there isn’t much more upside there. Franklin is a 2B that has some potential to hit a little….then they got an 18 yr old SS prospect that is doing fine in A-ball. That’s not a whole heck of a lot…all together that is less valuable than Russell, who they reportedly turned down from the A’s.

    • nobby821 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:19 PM

you forgot they got walker too

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:34 PM

What “Walker” are you talking about?

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:48 PM

You meant Adames, which … how that became Walker, I don’t know: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=adames000wil

Anyway, an 18-year-old A-ball SS is not much of an addition beyond Smyly and Franklin.

    • xjokerz - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Smyly is actually really good….and Nick Franklin is still viewed as a top prospect…he just turned 23 and its his FIRST YEAR in the majors.

you got TWO ready now MLB players.

      • stex52 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:55 PM

Smyly is very good in a relief role. He is still trying to find his way as a starter.

  23. tigersfandan - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Even though Jackson wasn’t that good, I did get a little choked up just now. Hope he can have a great career wherever he plays.

    • xjokerz - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:22 PM

hes been a monster let down for a while now.

hes not your boyfriend, time to let go.

  24. bluemoonking - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:21 PM

Is anyone sure Jack Z had anything to do with the trade? On the surface it is not bad for the Mariners or Tigers… Franklin will be a good player someday…

  25. twalton95 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:22 PM

Im so confused…. can someone please explain to me why the Rays got NOTHING for Price????? O.o

    • xjokerz - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Rays got fleeced in this deal.

as a Tigers fan..it feels like i got Price for basically free.

      the Price was right.

      • twalton95 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:32 PM

i just think its ridiculous, both Lackey and Price were under contract until the end of 2015, and the Red Sox arguably got more than the rays got for price… what?

    • Bob Loblaw - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:40 PM

They got the Tigers top prospect too. HBT is slow to update this.

      • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:50 PM

The only prospect I know they got is a Class A SS, Adames. He is NOT a “top prospect.”

      • Bob Loblaw - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:18 PM

From what I read on twittter, he was the tigers #1. Guess they were wrong.
