Tampa Bay news station tweets classless Detroit joke following David Price trade

Jul 31, 2014, 6:58 PM EST

The Rays dealt ace left-hander David Price to the Tigers before this afternoon’s non-waiver trade deadline as part of a three-team trade with the Mariners. For some reason, FOX 13 in Tampa Bay thought it was a good idea to post the following awful tweet to cheer up Rays fans who are sad about sports. Or something.

source:

Yes, because mocking poverty and squalid urban areas is pretty hilarious stuff. It’s especially ill-timed given the city’s current water crisis. Good job, guys.

With all of Twitter erupting, it didn’t take FOX 13 long to realize that the tweet in question was a really bad idea and just in poor taste in general. It has since been deleted. They issued this (lousy) apology:

FOX 2 in Detroit has since issued the following rebuttal, which pretty much rules:

It was damn funny. Only a libtard would take offense to it. Detroit is pretty much the epitome of what happens when liberals get their way and ruin a city. Look it up.

        From link…

“However, measuring a county’s lack of affluence this way skews the map of poorest places toward rural states (which tend to be red) and away from big cities (which tend to be blue). This undercuts the simplicity of the meme’s political message.”

Last I checked Michigan is run by the GOP in the state houses and the governors mansion. If you knew anything, then you’d know that an Emergency Manger run Detroit, appointed by governor Snyder. So the defacto dictator of Detroit is right now GOP appointed Kevyn Orr.

      • opkaos - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:07 PM

Sorry Detroit’s been run by dems-unions for last 70 years just look at it

      • lawson1974 - Aug 1, 2014 at 4:13 AM

Yeah, that GOP appointed dictator is there now BECAUSE of the years of liberal policies.

      • beanocook - Aug 6, 2014 at 11:05 PM

Red states have way more blacks (democratic voters) than blue states, which are much whiter.

      • beanocook - Aug 6, 2014 at 11:07 PM

Republicans are more likely to graduate college than democrats. Democrats are more likely to drop out of high school. Republicans make more money, democrats make less money.

    • josemartez - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:09 PM

The fact that you used a made-up word like “libtard” speaks volumes. Try working on your vocabulary for next time.

      • stercuilus65 - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:21 PM

Sorry to burst your bubble but all words were made up at one point. The fact that you didn’t realize this speaks volumes.

The fact that your a lib speaks volumes

      • tfbuckfutter - Jul 31, 2014 at 11:00 PM

@opkaos The volumes that the facts speak….are they in English? And properly punctuated? If so, perhaps you should pay attention to them. Especially when you’re going to insult a group that is known to value proper education, and you can barely communicate.

      • opkaos - Jul 31, 2014 at 11:16 PM

Wow Nazi grammar police.I can communicate just fine thanks.oh and Hitler was a left winger.

@opkaos Who are you talking to?

    • raidordie - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:28 PM

They’re in denial about what unions did to Detroit just like they are about gun control and Chicago. All they can do is say racist or bigot.

      • tfbuckfutter - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:41 PM

Gun control in Chicago is a problem because there is a steady pipeline being run into the city from Arkansas and Indiana, which have some of the laxest laws in the country.

That’s like saying harsh drug laws in Texas don’t work because it borders Mexico.

    • opkaos - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:56 PM

We know libs can’t take anybody being politically incorrect. Only thing that would have made this better is if Obama’s face was in it.

Sadly, Detroit is still more respectable than Florida. Hanging chads, miscounts, people running generators inside their homes, police pulling over other police and getting in a fist fight, Florida cops in the KKK, Casey Anthony, the whole George Zimmerman travesty.. and so much more.

      • msolo1 - Aug 1, 2014 at 10:04 AM

I’m from the north, but live in Tampa now…. You learn to just shake your head and move on…. at least its warm.

      • revrn2 - Aug 1, 2014 at 1:33 PM

Wait, what travesty? Zimmerman got what he deserved and Trayvon(thug) got what he deserved. I live in Michigan and hate going into Detroit right now. I also believe it will be back one day. I also believe it must be without the unions and democrats in control. They ruined it the first time and will again if they are allowed. THEY DON”T GET IT!

Detroit is a hole..pretty sad that a once thriving city has been ruined by Democrats policies for over 50 years now.

    • 18thstreet - Aug 1, 2014 at 9:29 AM

And how would you describe Mississippi? Is that what happens when conservatives get to run a whole state?

      • beanocook - Aug 6, 2014 at 11:12 PM

Mississippi didn’t vote for a GOP state legislature until 10 years ago. You are a moron. It was run by democrats for over 100 years. Thanks to democrat segregation and slavery the south had less development than the republican north. Now that the GOP runs the south, it’s integrated and growing faster than the north.

      • 18thstreet - Aug 7, 2014 at 9:41 AM

I didn’t say Democrat or Republican. I said conservatives. Conservatives have run the state of Mississippi since 1817. The conservatives used to be Democrats, and the Republicans didn’t exist.

But the results in Mississippi attest to what a state looks like when you let conservatives run a state without opposition.

    • leeeroooyjeeenkiiins - Aug 1, 2014 at 10:12 AM

I agree that the city is an unfortunate example of what happens when radical leftists run a city for decades and essentially go unchallenged, but there’s nothing funny about it. There are plenty of real victims involved in this.

    • historiophiliac - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:46 PM

Do you think people needing water and having to appeal to the UN because our country won’t take care of them is something to be glib about?

      • lawson1974 - Aug 1, 2014 at 4:23 AM

Maybe if the paid their water bill instead of the cable or cell phone bill, they wouldnt have that problem

  3. ryanw822 - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:09 PM

lol@ the Detroit station posting a pic from opening day. Nevermind the countless empty seats in Detroit for any other game.

    Fox Tampa wins easily.

    • pinerider22 - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:16 PM

ryanw……you don’t let the facts get in the way of your opinion, do you?

    • lukedunphysscienceproject - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:06 PM

Tampa wins what? City with the worst baseball stadium? City with the absolute worst fan support in MLB? City with the worst fan support whose terrible stadium isn’t even in the city the team is named after? Only city that has a major league team that gets outdrawn by another team that has its spring training there?

      Yes, so much win there.

      • Steve A - Aug 1, 2014 at 12:05 AM

“…whose terrible stadium isn’t even in the city the team is named after?”

Since I’m arguing against the ignorance of people about Detroit who most likely have never come close to Detroit and know nothing about Detroit other than some ruin porn articles and news stories they’ve read and seen, I feel it necessary to nitpick your comment.

Tampa Bay is used to represent a region that encapsulates both the cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg. Thus, having a team named Tampa Bay playing in St. Pete is logical.

      • lukedunphysscienceproject - Aug 1, 2014 at 1:16 AM

I respect your right to nitpick. How familiar are you with the Tampa/St. Pete area? My point, and I admit it may not be that clearly stated, is that there is a another major league team, a division rival in fact, whose stadium sits in the shadow of Raymond James Stadium, that draws more fans in April than the Rays do in October.

I was trying to point out the irony that the Yankees play in Tampa, and the Rays do not. And if the Yankees were for some reason playing a regular season game at Steinbrenner field and the Rays were at the Trop, there is little question who would outdraw who.

      • slappymcknucklepunch - Aug 1, 2014 at 8:57 AM

I belive you forgot:worse owner and front office in the majors.

    • tigersfandan - Jul 31, 2014 at 11:22 PM

      What countless empty seats?

    • Steve A - Aug 1, 2014 at 12:00 AM

lol @ misinformed comments about attendance in Detroit based on one picture.

      • thejoker44 - Aug 1, 2014 at 7:31 PM

I’am a Ray fan, did you go to the games, or you just imagine, when Boston or Yankees play at Tampa you don’t know who is the home team, and that’s a shame, the true is that Tampa don’t deserve MLB team.

    • CancerUgly - Aug 1, 2014 at 12:00 AM

What in the hell are you talking about? We sell out consistently, even when playing horrible teams…like the Rays.

    • mortalkondek - Aug 1, 2014 at 9:15 AM

Nonsense. Detroit will turn out more folks in one afternoon game than Tampa bay will see all week.

    • revrn2 - Aug 1, 2014 at 1:34 PM

So what place in the standings ARE the Rays anyway?? Oh yeah that low!!

  4. wjarvis - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:10 PM

For some reason this immediately reminded me of the hastily made tourism videos for Cleveland that came several years ago (which if this didn’t offend you were pretty funny)

      Fun Times in Cleveland Today!

      • dsaverno - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:31 PM

No one is perfect. No city is perfect. I live in Cleveland, and, shocker, this does not offend me. The most biting humor always has a ring of truth to it. Is it sad?–yes. Is it unfortunate that people live this way in the rust belt?–yes. But I’m proud to call Cleveland home. Man, we have a beer here called ‘burning river pale ale.’ If everyone was as sensitive as some of the people commenting on this blog, a name like that could never fly. I think the ‘classless’ headline is a bit much. What’s wrong with embracing competition and rivalry. Trash-talking between twelve year olds on thousands of playgrounds across the country is much worse than this. Hell, look at siblings competing against each other in daily life. There is a difference between kidding and being mean-spirited. This Cleveland video and the Tampa/Detroit tweet were just humor to me. Why does it have to be more?

  5. pw1265 - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:16 PM

what do you expect from a “news” station that has the word FOX in it. you EXPECT classless!

  6. captaincanoe - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:45 PM

Don’t feel sorry for Detroit at all. And they want to build a passenger railway system though downtown to take nobody to no where. They don’t learn. The picture of Detroit is what corruption and liberalism looks like on the inside.

    • 18thstreet - Aug 1, 2014 at 9:30 AM

And what can we learn from Mississippi?

  7. rcali - Jul 31, 2014 at 9:57 PM

Yikes, relax Mr. Writer. Just a little joke. Nobody got hurt. If you want to be mad at anybody be mad at the city leaders that put them in this mess.

  8. seanwasamarine - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:12 PM

That’s not classless, that’s the damn truth.

  9. brewcrewfan54 - Jul 31, 2014 at 10:43 PM

Lame yet probably true joke aside, team Tampa acts like David Price asked out when as far as I remember he said he wanted to stay. So they’re bashing him for a choice that wasn’t his. That’s stupid

  10. seanwasamarine - Jul 31, 2014 at 11:14 PM

You value proper education, but don’t know how to run a city? Maybe you should educate yourself, and your friends, how not to bankrupt a city and run this country into the ground. And don’t blame Bush, because you morons have had enough time to fix his messes.

  11. Steve A - Aug 1, 2014 at 12:17 AM

I just don’t understand why what happens with professional sports teams causes people to argue about the merits of the cities in which those teams play. I was recently at a Tigers game in Anaheim, and Miguel Cabrera hit a home run. The drunk Angels fan in front of me then used the rest of the game to shout about how horrible and broke Detroit was. He had never been to Detroit and he said he would never go. Yet, he still “knew” Detroit was worse than South Central LA. Again, he spewed all of this hate because Miguel Cabrera hit a home run against the Angels.

The City of Detroit is troubled. It has been through a lot over the last 50 years that have helped bring it down greatly. However, improvements are being made. Downtown is one of the safest areas in the city. That is where the high majority of non-residents go when going to the City of Detroit. Of course, there are far more people who live in the metro Detroit area than in the City of Detroit. The metro area is very similar to many other metro areas around the country. They all have their affluent areas and poor areas. The Home Depot is near the Walmart, which is near the Best Buy. Metro Detroit is still one of the largest in the country, despite the large population loss from the City of Detroit.

This is sports. Let’s keep it that way.

    • lawson1974 - Aug 1, 2014 at 4:22 AM

Its the 14th largest Metro statistical area…. It used to be around 5th.

The Metro area has actually lost population since 1970 while the country has gained 100 million people, try to find other major urban area where you can say that.

To compare it to other large cities and say it is basically the same is farcical.

      • dsaverno - Aug 1, 2014 at 7:39 AM

Chicago, Cleveland, St. Louis, Newark, Birmingham, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Minneapolis.

Those are all cities that have experienced 30+ percent drops in population over the past few decades. The list is much longer, but those are the largest cities. Just because a city is out of favor doesn’t mean it will always be so.

Why is it so difficult to understand that things change?

  12. genericcommenter - Aug 1, 2014 at 1:14 AM

Politics in general is a very loathsome thing, and I don’t think has much place here. Whether it’s calling people “libtards” or “your an idiot” or “conservative” as pejorative, it’s just all rather unseemly.

As someone who travels to Detroit for business, I will say DTW is 1 of the nicest airports in the US and a lot of the downtown is starting to slowly but surely turn it around. That being said, a lot of Detroit does look like that. There is a reason all those shows on like Discovery and NatGeo use Detroit as the back drop for post apocalyptic US. Also they have their whole water campaign to help pay for people who are very far behind in water payments.

It is taking a cheap shot to be sure and is probably like kicking someone when they’re down. However, Detroit does need a lot of work and given a choice between both places to actually live, I don’t think it’d be that hard to decide.

  20. theoriginalvav - Aug 1, 2014 at 9:32 AM

Current water crisis?! Come on, this isn’t a partisan comment. These people have chosen to not pay their water bill because they want something that costs something for nothing. That’s worthy of ridicule. It’s not a crisis. The water is there, people just want it, but don’t want to pay for it. That’d be like DJ Short’s employer asking him to keep writing for prohardballtalk but deciding that they don’t really want to pay him for his services because they could get by easier if they didn’t have to. I would never tie my horse to either of these corrupt political parties, but even those of you who worship at the shrine of both should be able to look at this situation for what it is. People on public assistance, not using their public assistance to pay for their basic needs. I bet there isn’t a cable or cell phone crisis here. And if you think this is politically incorrect, then you just expect less out of people than I do. Low income must mean too stupid to comprehend anything and needs some “educated” and “cultured” self-important watchdog to save them from themselves.

  21. wpjohnson - Aug 1, 2014 at 10:37 AM

The truth is the truth. Going from beautiful Tampa Bay to the wastelands of Detroit is not a positive move. Hopefully, Price has a license to carry a concealed weapon. He’ll neede it.

    • dsaverno - Aug 1, 2014 at 11:06 AM

Anyone who thinks that their town, city, state, country, life, is purely perfect, is going through life with blinders on. There is nothing more dangerous that not seeing what is going on in front of one’s face. The ancient greeks called it hubris.

  22. thejoker44 - Aug 1, 2014 at 5:06 PM

Tampa don’t deserve a MLB team, the fanbase is between 10 to 12 thousand, there’s no way that a franchise could be successful under those conditions. When Boston or Yankees play in Tampa you don’t know who’s the home team, and that’s a shame.
