The Yankees acquire Martin Prado from the Diamondbacks

Jul 31, 2014, 4:16 PM EST

Jack Curry of YES Network reports that the Yankees have acquired Martin Prado from the Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks will get catcher Pete O’Brien and a player to be named later in return.

Prado s mostly a third baseman, but he can play second, short and the outfield too. When he was with the Braves he even covered first base on occasion. He’s 30 and is having a bit of a down year at the plate — .270/.317/.370 — but his versatility and durability is exactly what the Yankees need with all of their injured and/or fragile players.

Joel Sherman of the Post reports that Stephen Drew has been told he is playing second base for the Yankees, so figure it’s super utility work for Prado and, possibly, some covering for Mark Teixeira at first base. Basically, everywhere else he is needed too. Plus, Prado is signed through 2016, so the Yankees have his services for a while, giving them some good flexibility.

They just picked up Headley last week. How many third basemen do they need?

    • proudlycanadian - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:19 PM

That is the third minor move by the Yankees today.

      • Jeremy T - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:30 PM

        Third? Drew, Prado, and who?

      • proudlycanadian - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:32 PM

Esmil Rogers off waivers from the Jays.

      • Jeremy T - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:39 PM

Ah, right. So minor I already forgot about it :)

    • jwbiii - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:22 PM

I think Drew goes to 2B, although he’s played anywhere but SS in the majors or the minors.

    • Jeremy T - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:26 PM

They’ve been lacking a backup 1B while Tex struggles through minor injuries, and are in a similar situation in RF with only Ichiro backing up Beltran. Between Drew/Roberts at 2B, Jeter at SS, Teixeira at 1B, and Beltran/Ichiro in RF, there should be at least one opening for Prado just about every game.

      • Jeremy T - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:09 PM

I am a bit confused about the status of Brendan Ryan, though. If I’m remembering correctly, he’s signed through 2015, and it now seems like he has multiple people in front of him at just about every position.

Defensive replacement for Jeter, super-sub for ’15.

    • SocraticGadfly - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:17 PM

And, they have Centaur Guy for 3B next year, too.

I won’t even try to figure out Cashman.

Excellent job on that Justin Upton trade, Dbacks! Will we hear of Kevin Towers’ departure before the end of the day?

    • mazblast - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:00 PM

In Arizona, stupidity is not confined to the manager and GM. Ownership seems to register highly on the Duh meter.

  3. pablosanchez12 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:23 PM

Very quick editing job Craig. You forgot about Headley though. You know it, I know it, jbriggs81 knows it. And that might be it.

  4. bronx77 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:23 PM

He is going to play rf.

  5. bronx77 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:24 PM

They don’t have the prospects to do major deals. At least they are trying to improve marginally. That’s all that can be asked from them right now. And Prado is an upgrade especially since it just took a minor prospect with a terrible obp.

  6. psunick - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:25 PM

Yankees needed some grit and chemistry

  7. ahrmon - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:26 PM

I like this deal. O’Brien is a SO machine w/ no position, and Prado will help plug holes for the next 2 years.

    Now, about that Drew deal…

  8. edelmanfanclub - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:27 PM

Prado can play anywhere and mashes lefties. He’s signed for a couple seasons though isn’t he?

    • jwbiii - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:32 PM

      Through 2016 at $11m/per

    • nsauser - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:34 PM

Yea, the Dbacks signed him to an ext in the neighborhood of $44 million for 4 years.

  9. bronx77 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:35 PM

    @pablosanchez12

    I saw it too.

  10. csbanter - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:37 PM

The Yanks are only 5 1/2 games out. The AL east is up for grabs, defense was clearly needed by bombers and Drew, Prado are upgrades.

    • mazblast - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:01 PM

Apparently you haven’t seen Prado play 2B. He’s best defensively at 3B and average at best in the outfield.

  11. bronx77 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:39 PM

    1.gardner
    2.jeter
    3.ellsbury
    4.texiera
    5.beltran
    6.McCann
    7.headley
    8.prado
    9.drew

Not great but much improved over what they had before the headley deal. The Yankees aren’t afraid to play someone out of position so drew at second will be fine. Prado will play rf until Beltran can throw which may come soon. Then Prado will fill in where needed as guys get half days at dh. Not a flashy move but still solid.

    • Mr. No Days Off - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:42 PM

I like this lineup assuming Prado can play right field. Drew is definitely an upgrade defensively over Brian Roberts at second base, but he can’t hit.

    • geejon - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:39 PM

If that were on a menu it’d be called the poo-poo platter deluxe.

  12. Mr. No Days Off - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:39 PM

I would much rather see Prado as the starting second baseman with Stephen Drew backing up Jeter at short and playing second base when Prado rotates around the field. The way Stephen Drew is hitting, he is hardly an upgrade at second base over both Brian Roberts and Brendan Ryan.

    • pisano - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:54 PM

Brendan Ryan can’t spell HIT, as for Roberts, I’m just glad he’s gone, and I hope Kelly Johnson isn’t far behind him.

      • mazblast - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:02 PM

Johnson was the “asset” they traded for Drew.

  13. bronx77 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:52 PM

Cashman already said that Drew was going to be the 2nd basemen. So that leaves rf to Prado. I would have preferred to not get Drew but oh well.

  14. bronx77 - Jul 31, 2014 at 4:56 PM

    Johnson was traded for Drew

  15. drewzducks - Jul 31, 2014 at 5:16 PM

How many games has Drew played at 2B in the majors? How many innings? Outs?

  16. packman1214 - Jul 31, 2014 at 6:30 PM

I say get rid of cashman!

  17. greymares - Jul 31, 2014 at 7:21 PM

If Prado would have started his career with the Yankees he would be a 6/7 time all-star

  18. joecb91 - Aug 1, 2014 at 12:20 AM

As much as I hated trading Upton, it looks so much worse now that the “centerpiece” of the trade is gone.
