Earlier this week the Royals became the fourth team to release Joe Saunders this season and the 33-year-old left-hander has already found a fifth organization, signing a minor-league deal with the Orioles.

Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that Saunders will head to Triple-A and be used as a reliever, which is a change after he repeatedly insisted on only being a starter despite consistently poor results for the past two seasons.

Saunders has always had extreme platoon splits, so while his days of being a reasonably effective starter may be over he could resurface as a decent situational southpaw.

That’s it. I’m going outside right now and start throwing left handed. I bet I’ll get a spring training invite by the end of the month.

Well it’s August and with Jim Johnson and Joe Saunders free agents, and Brian Roberts soon to be one, you just knew the Orioles were going to go the cheap route and sign some other team’s bird droppings that had previous success at one point with Baltimore.

So two pitchers for minor-league depth and a second baseman who, depending on your feelings towards defensive stats, is somewhere between an upgrade and a major upgrade.

Yeah. Terrible idea to pick those guys up.

Ever think O,s pitching coach may be able too straighten these guys out! Both did a great job while with us….

Dan Duquette never met a lost cause he wasn’t willing to give a minor league contract to. Funny though, if 1 in 10 works out, he looks like a genius. Just ask Steve Pearce.

Or Nate McLouth. Or Miguel Gonzalez. Or a month of Lew Ford.
