VIDEO: Ezequiel Carrera makes an incredible over-the-shoulder diving catch

Aug 4, 2014, 8:57 PM EDT

Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was robbed of extra bases by Red Sox rookie Mookie Betts on Friday night at Fenway Park. Tonight, it was Ezequiel Carrera’s turn.

Making his first start since his call-up late last week, Carrera saved Max Scherzer‘s bacon this evening with this incredible over-the-shoulder diving catch with the bases loaded and nobody out in the third inning.

Talk about do-or-die. It doesn’t get much better than this.

    Fantastic catch!

Definitely cost the Yanks one run, and Ellsbury on third with nobody out probably turns into another run. Facing Scherzer and the Tiger offense, those extra two runs probably wind up mattering.

    eh, just mediocre ;)

      It’ll do.

I’ve done better, though never when actually awake and playing.
This is one of the rare “incredible” plays that really lives up to the billing.

      • asimonetti88 - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:12 PM

Exactly. Just another run of the mill over the shoulder diving backwards and still somehow completing the catch.

      • historiophiliac - Aug 4, 2014 at 11:13 PM

        He’s a hack.

I hope all those thumbs down are from Tigers homers who are either obtuse or lack a funny bone.

      Thanks Kevin. Thanks a lot.
Now I have to re-think my entire pie over cake thing.
      Jeesh Man.

Oh…lemme guess. You signed the card “Love Kevin”. Lol!

      • Kevin S. - Aug 5, 2014 at 2:16 PM

The card-signing thing is stupid, but that’s the only tweet I could find with the quote.

      • stlouis1baseball - Aug 5, 2014 at 2:40 PM

Lol! We r good Kevin. I was really just giving you a hard time.

Lots of fist-pumping from Max tonight.

    Austin Who?

  7. papacrick - Aug 5, 2014 at 2:35 AM

Can’t wait to see how Max spins this to “Kudos to me”

  8. irishmanknowsall - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:50 AM

Worst lead-in sentence ever, totally unrelated to the story and video. Incredibly poor alleged journalism. Roger Angell, where the hell are you?

    • stlouis1baseball - Aug 5, 2014 at 11:44 AM

Ummm…Jacoby Ellsbury got robbed of extra bases again?
Just a guess, but I am going to go out on a limb and say THAT is the tie-in.

  9. psousa1 - Aug 5, 2014 at 11:34 AM

I made just as good as catch in my softball game last week. I wonder if Carrera got a late jump on it because he was looking at hot chick walking by like I was.
