Video: The Rally Possum pays a visit to Oakland

Aug 5, 2014, 8:20 AM EST

From last night’s A’s-Rays game:

I’m from West Virginia so, obviously, my first thought was that this was just one of those crazy new concessions. But apparently he wasn’t wanted there for some reason.

    Bite Me !

Judging by the decrepit state of Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was an oversized rat.

For some reason, I’m reminded of the raccoons from The Great Outdoors when the guys were talking about taking out the trash in this video.

Poor opossums, they get such a bad rap. Sure, they have tiny brains and aren’t very bright comparatively speaking, but they are survivors. Far older than we are and likely to be around long after we are gone as well.

    • Craig Calcaterra - Aug 5, 2014 at 8:55 AM

      But . . . they’re gross.

      • Paper Lions - Aug 5, 2014 at 9:06 AM

Based on what? I’ve handled live opossums, many of them, and prepared museum specimens of many as well. Compared to any other mammal of similar size that I have dealt with, they are no more or less gross (though far less smelly than any mustelid).

      • stex52 - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:07 AM

They’re wild animals. Most wild animals are “gross” when you get up close to them. Except possible for rabbits, which are just nature’s version of the Blue Plate Special.

    • primantibrothersgavemefoodpoisoning - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:08 AM

They are survivors because predators just cringe when they see them.

    • tmohr - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:41 AM

Tiny brains and not very bright? You just described Lenny Dykstra.

      • Paper Lions - Aug 5, 2014 at 10:56 AM

Hey now. No need to insult opossums!

        That was just uncalled for.

Animal streakers happens in the NPB too, however most of them are squirrels. I haven’t seen a possum before.

  7. minibull - Aug 5, 2014 at 9:03 AM

Paper Lions, are you talking about ‘possums or Pete Rose…?

  8. Rexclamation Points! - Aug 5, 2014 at 9:06 AM

Aw, that’s just Sam Fuld’s ride home, guys! It was getting late and Bitey was getting worried about the little guy.

    EAT MORE POSSUM !

  11. 4d3fect - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:36 PM

Ah, you haven’t lived ’til you’ve had one HISS at you.

–Almost stumbled across one in my backyard and I guess we startled each other.

    or something.

    –Creepy.

I’m from WV too, and my first thought was ‘wow, that’s a tiny possum.’

  13. pantherpro - Aug 5, 2014 at 12:49 PM

How perfect for the dump you play in. Only 18,000 for best team in baseball. How perfect is that. You just cant
escape the Giants so you might as well move to Portland where someone would care!

  14. clydeserra - Aug 5, 2014 at 2:08 PM

And just a reminder, there are critters in every ballpark, restaurant, and home you go to.
