Phillies shut down Cliff Lee for the season

Making official what was expected, the Phillies have ruled out Cliff Lee returning to pitch again this season.

Lee is on the disabled list with a strained pronate flexor tendon and general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told Todd Zolecki of that the team won’t even have him begin a throwing program until “October or November.”

The good news, however, is that after being examined by a specialist it’s been determined that Lee won’t require surgery. Of course, surgery or not he’s now a huge question mark at age 35 and the injury makes it tougher for the Phillies to potentially trade Lee and the $37.5 million remaining on his contract this offseason.

Now we know that 2/5s of next years rotation is set with Hamels and Lee. I’m ok with that.

Remember when the phillies had the best rotation in baseball?

remember when phillies had one of best teams in baseball before their new gm took over every since since he ran the team in the ground what a shame

Remember when the Phillies set a franchise record for wins in 2011 and went to the WS? That team was head and shoulders more talented then 2008. 2012 they took the eventual WS champion Cardinals to a game 5. So yeah, I remember that.

You’re off by a year. 2011 they lost in the wild card round, haven’t been to the WS since ’09. In 2012 they won 81 games.

Umm, the Cards went to the WS in 2011 (over the Phillies, then the Brewers). Giants won in 2012.

The Phillies did manage to lose to the eventual World Series champion in the playoffs for three straight years, so that was fun. Yankees in the WS in 2009, Giants in the NLCS in 2010, and Cardinals in the division series in 2011.

Maybe they beat the Giants in 2010 if RAJ doesn’t trade Cliff Lee for nothing during the off-season, though their problem was really more with the offense in that series. Maybe if they keep Lee they don’t have to trade for Oswalt and trade for a hitter instead. Who knows?

I bet you remember what year you were born, too. LOL

I think this is a wise decision.

Could it have been the 135 pitch game Sandberg had him pitch in early May??? Ugh!
