The Dodgers announced that they have placed starter Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list with a left hip impingement. Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that Beckett is also dealing with a groin strain. The vacant roster spot allows the Dodgers to activate starter Roberto Hernandez, acquired from the Phillies yesterday, to make tonight’s start against the Brewers.

Beckett, who authored a no-hitter against the Phillies earlier this season, has struggled since the start of July. Over his last five starts, spanning only 22 innings, Beckett posted a 6.55 ERA with a 19/11 K/BB ratio. His results on the season overall are still pretty good, though, as he sports a 2.88 ERA over 115 2/3 innings.

Update: MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick says Beckett might retire as a result of his injuries.

That update is a real surprise. As much as I’ve always disliked this guy, one never wishes an injury to end a players career unless the player is delmon young

Given the extent of the injuries it kind of makes sense that he would consider retirement. He’s in his walk year and this surgery will probably cost him all of the 2015 season. No one is going to sign him this winter for what would be a lost year coming off of several injury riddled seasons.

Best he would be looking at is a 1 year contract for very little money so that he can rehab with a team with a club option worth maybe $3 million for 2016.

As a 45-year old, married, sexually active male, I experience the same injuries on a regular basis.

    G’night folks!

Baseball will miss his surly attitude.
