No structural damage for Justin Verlander, a DL trip may be avoided

Aug 12, 2014, 4:38 PM EDT

Detroit breathes a sigh of relief:

Of course, they still have an ace who has been pretty darn ineffective and that could be a concern. But when you think of how bad it could’ve been, this is pretty darn good.

There is great joy in a certain corner in Oklahoma.

“Of course, they still have an ace who has been pretty darn ineffective and that could be a concern. ”

So? They have like three aces on that team. Maybe four if you want to count Sanchez.

    • brianincbus - Aug 12, 2014 at 4:51 PM

And they also still owe him over $100 million for 5 more years, so yeah, there’s reason for concern doctorofsmuganomics.

Not my money, nor is it my problem.

        I’m a Royals fan.

    • philliesblow - Aug 12, 2014 at 5:04 PM

Sanchez is out of action until mid September with a pectoral muscle issue.

      • doctorofsmuganomics - Aug 12, 2014 at 5:06 PM

Somehow Detroit will have to make due with David Price, Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello.

        Oh the humanity

    • historiophiliac - Aug 12, 2014 at 5:09 PM

Get comfortable. Have some poutine fries. Relax. Pay no attention to the Tiger next to you. He’s mostly harmless…mostly.

      • doctorofsmuganomics - Aug 12, 2014 at 5:10 PM

        Thanks I will.

Glad to hear you aren’t seriously hurt. Take your time coming back. Signed the rest of MLB.

I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing for my fantasy team…

No “structural damage” Good news for Kate

    • historiophiliac - Aug 12, 2014 at 5:49 PM

      It’s his shoulder, idiot.

      • slappymcknucklepunch - Aug 12, 2014 at 10:56 PM

Can you not take a joke? Sheesh,do you post at Jezebel too?

      • historiophiliac - Aug 12, 2014 at 10:59 PM

Being pervy about his gf is tiresome and I hate having to see it ALL the time. It’s not funny. The one about lifting the money with his other arm was though.

      • slappymcknucklepunch - Aug 13, 2014 at 12:46 AM

Look,I’m sorry,I know that this blog has maybe only 15% or so of women on it,I get why you have to defend the snarkiness of how we sometimes talk.I even get why you do this knowing it is an uphill battle. But sometimes a joke is just a joke.I think you are a great poster, been upvoting(3/4) of what you say and NEVER downvoting you as I understand you just want to not
see a bunch of mysoginistic crap on one of your favorite boards. However,I really did not see how the OP was saying anything bad about Ms Upton. He was kind of talking about Mr V’s shortcomings so to speak.

        Thank you for replying.

      • historiophiliac - Aug 13, 2014 at 11:35 AM

“Shortcomings so to speak”? Is that supposed to be a euphemism too? That’s the problem with his post. Putting “structural damage” in quotes reaches really hard to suggest something dirty about what is really a shoulder issue. I’d bet there are hundreds of places on the internet where guys can go to talk about Kate Upton — probably a lot of them are on posts that are even about here. It’s tiresome to hear about her EVERY.TIME.WE.TALK.ABOUT.VERLANDER. Sheesh. Take it somewhere else. Has everyone been going on about McCutchen’s fiancee on the posts about his injury? The fact that this guy had to work so hard to make a “joke” about Upton here demonstrates how lame these efforts are — and it’s not even what the post is about or relates to his injury. Take it to the SI boards or something. I won’t read it there. Thank you very much.

PS The fact that it shows up on every post is how you know it’s excessive.

  7. thatsnuckinfuts - Aug 12, 2014 at 5:58 PM

I’d rather they found an injury, that way it could explain how he’s pitched this season.
So he’s healthy and just sucks so much he doesn’t deserve a spot on a post-season roster if the Tigers make it?

    • vlock1 - Aug 12, 2014 at 6:23 PM

Yeah, this is kind of a pyrrhic victory, isn’t it?

“Oh, he’s not hurt? Great! Then why isn’t he Justin Verlander anymore?”

  8. spursareold - Aug 12, 2014 at 6:08 PM

He should have lifted that bag of money that Mike Ilitch gave him with his LEFT arm.

  9. sportsfan18 - Aug 12, 2014 at 8:35 PM

He used to be an ace.

    He was an ace.

We all know what the definition of an “ace” is…

Ya’ll know Justin’s numbers this season. ERA+ of only 87, well below league average of 100

    ERA of 4.76
    WHIP of 1.424

Here are the stats of another pitcher so far this season.

    ERA+ of 88
    ERA of 4.31
    WHIP of 1.353

One Brandon McCarthy. Good kid, NOT an ace though and the “ace” is NOT out pitching Brandon THIS season.

An “ace” would be doing much better than well below league average.

    King Hernandez is an ace

    Chris Sale is an ace

Verlander used to be an ace…

Verlander is closer to the bottom of stats across the board for all qualified starting pitchers in the league this season. That is a FACT, no opinion needed.

Numbers are online to look at.

Tigers have to hope he plateaus instead of continuing to plummet…

And that his plateau lasts a while…

  10. papacrick - Aug 12, 2014 at 9:50 PM

Save your breath dude. I’m not sure there’s a single fan on this board that doesn’t know JV isn’t an ace this year and we all have an idea of what his numbers are. Look it up online

  11. sportsfan18 - Aug 13, 2014 at 1:01 PM

several days ago I said he wasn’t an ace I was pilloried on here…

folks obviously think he’s still an ace…
