Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie initially hoped to play through a fractured right index finger, but now the A’s have placed him on the disabled list.

Lowrie suffered the injury when he took a hard ground ball off his finger last week and went 1-for-11 at the plate while also feeling pain on most throws defensively before shutting things down.

Lowrie had a breakout 2013 season for the A’s, hitting .290 with a .791 OPS while staying healthy for the first time in his career. He’d been healthy this season until the finger injury, but his production has slipped to a .238 batting average and .671 OPS with free agency right around the corner this winter.

This is tough for the A’s as Lowrie, even at reduced production, was a fixture at short. The A’s have been unable to develop a middle infielder of quality from their farm system, and also have been unable to obtain one in trade. So while he’s out, the A’s will probably go with Sogard or Punto at short (a defensive upgrade over Lowrie) and Callaspo and Punto at 2nd. Not a lot of offense in those combinations.

I’m assuming Parrino gets called up. Losing Lowrie for a couple of weeks isn’t the end of the world, but not addressing the middle infield at the deadline is biting Beane in the ass.

He’s a .238 hitter, hurt, over the hill and plays for another team. He’s just the kind of player Brian Cashman loves. I can see him getting a lucrative multi-year contract from the Yankees.

It was stupid to let him try to play through it in the first place.
