HBT Daily: You had ONE JOB

Aug 20, 2014, 1:31 PM EDT

Seems as though the entire Cubs organization is just going through the motions, and has been for many years now. No passion for the game, from top to bottom. ESPN should have a reality show, “MLB Impossible”, just like the one on the Food Network for restaurants. One hot shoe comes in and shakes the franchise up from top to bottom and gets them back on track.

I don’t know Craig. It’s not the first time this has happened and sometimes it could be that the ump waited too long to stop play and the conditions got worse faster than anticipated. Wind and heavy rain can make the tarp pretty hard to handle and I’m sure it’s tougher than it looks. I think you need to cut the grounds crew some slack.

    • candlestickkid - Aug 20, 2014 at 1:55 PM

It only rained for 15 freaking minutes! Four hours to recover from the tarp debacle.

      • pete2112 - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:13 PM

I suppose if the grounds crew weren’t giving it their all they need some blame in this but I do think you could blame the head ump for not stopping play sooner or for not at least knowing the situation with the storm that passed by. I think for you it’s just that it meant a San Fran loss. You wouldn’t be complaining if it was the Cubs that lost the rain/tarp shortened game.

Also, has Wrigley updated their field with a better drainage system like the newer parks?

You act like it only sprinkled for 15 minutes. Accounts from people who were actually at the game indicate that it rained over an inch in that amount of time. That is an awful lot of rain in a very short amount of time. The other thing is that left field was a swamp after the rain. It was just a bad scene all the way around. Things happen sometimes. My favorite part of this is all the whiny Giants fans with their conspiracy theories. What does it profit the Cubs to have a rain shortened win in a likely 85 to 90 loss season? Is there some super secret reason that the Cubs would want to screw the Giants?

    Craig,

What’s wrong buddy. You OK? Getting so worked up about this leads me to believe that you are really unhappy in other areas of your life. I agree that it was not the finest moment by a grounds crew, but 2 posts already seems a little excessive. There certainly has to be other topics going on in the world of baseball that would be of more value to readers.

If you really want to blame someone, blame me. I gave a doggy dick weather report yesterday on WGN and my guess is that the grounds crew relied on me. I am the reason they were unprepared.

If you need to talk to someone, I am here for you. I just want you happy.

    Love,

    Tom Skilling

Actually, a grounds crew has much more than just ONE JOB to do. I won’t bother you with the details since you don’t seem to give a crap.

    • pete2112 - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:27 PM

Craig has a list of his minions and their responsibilities, and the Cubs grounds crew is one of them.

    • 18thstreet - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:40 PM

But it’s much more fun to say they had just one job!

      Checkmate.

      • pete2112 - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:41 PM

        And easier.

  5. nobody78 - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:28 PM

Isn’t it a bit much to use your spot to berate this poor grounds crew? Craig, you had ONE JOB: Say something interesting about baseball. And you do this!

  6. pete2112 - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:31 PM

    The world according to Craig:

    PED’s – good.

    Cubs ground crew – bad

  7. irishlad19 - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:43 PM

Too easy to criticize a crew doing its job and getting hammered by weather.
Only a smug white collar guy thinks this is funny.

    • unclemosesgreen - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:12 PM

You got that right. Of course, less than one month ago this happened http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/07/24/video-the-yankees-grounds-crew-had-a-heck-of-a-time-getting-the-tarp-on-last-night/comment-page-1/ and Craig didn’t care.

So yes, he’s a smug white collar co-bag talking a bunch of crap about stuff when he has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about. Also, no internal consistency from an incident that happened less than one month ago at Yankee Stadium.

Nasty, smug, disingenuous. That’s Craig lately.

  8. sfm073 - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:12 PM

What does bangin the game mean?

  9. randomjoeblow - Aug 20, 2014 at 3:20 PM

When reached for comment, Donovan McNabb said, “Craig, even *I’m* famliar with the fact that, every year, there will be rain-shortened MLB games..”
