Spotted at the Des Moines airport: 1,023 career homers

This tweet from Chipper Jones amused me, perhaps more than it had any right to:

No biggie, just two 42-year-old should-be Hall of Famers with a combined 20 All-Star game appearances and 1,023 career homers running into each other in the Des Moines, Iowa airport.

Jones is retired, so he was probably hunting there or something. Ramirez is a player/coach for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, for whom he’s hit just .206 in 21 games.

Hunting at the airport? Is that legal in Iowa?

  2. pinkfloydprism - Aug 20, 2014 at 12:51 PM

Manny is a would be HOFer… downgraded due to his PED involvement.

2 positive tests is the kicker – this isn’t Barry or Clemens using before testing – he used and got busted twice AFTER testing started so not only was he a PED user he also has to be considered among the most stupidest players in the history of the game

test positive once you can play it off – test positive twice you’re just dumb, plain and simple and should never be near the HOF

Cortisone shots are a PED. Just look at Kirk Gibson’s WS homer back in ’88…dude could barely walk but after a little boom-boom he’s fist-pumping around the bases. Impossible to argue that Drug didn’t Enhance his Performance.

      • pinkfloydprism - Aug 20, 2014 at 11:02 PM

But cortisone is approved right? What Manny used is only approved in Mexico.

      • longfootlefty - Aug 21, 2014 at 3:48 AM

PEDs are PEDs. You can pretend there’s a difference, that being “approved” means something….but that’s just arbitrarily choosing to make heroes out of some people and villains out of others

Airports have become like shopping malls. You never know who you’ll run into. I ran into Danny Devito at LAX a few weeks ago. By the way, kudos for Jone using the Casablanca line. Well done.

I’m just impressed with the Casablanca reference at the end . . . but I shouldn’t get my hopes up; it’s also a Fall Out Boy song.

Are they on the campaign trail?

  6. captaincanoe - Aug 20, 2014 at 1:12 PM

There is no hunting season in August in Iowa. Unless he’s hunting coyotes or something like that.

    • twinfan24 - Aug 20, 2014 at 1:42 PM

Could be scouting locations if he plans to hunt there later in the year.

      • kopy - Aug 20, 2014 at 2:17 PM

Not just scouting, but also maybe buying land as well.

  7. ramrene - Aug 20, 2014 at 1:21 PM

You’re not a HOFer if you had to ‘roid up to get ALL of those HR’s. Seriously, his whole career was played during the steroid era and we all know he didn’t give a sh#t about using or getting caught since he got caught 2x so why would anybody give him the benefit of the doubt that at any time in his career he was clean?

HOFer? he’s got as much a chance of getting in as my nutt sack!

    • 18thstreet - Aug 20, 2014 at 1:24 PM

      Zzzzz.

      • historiophiliac - Aug 20, 2014 at 1:46 PM

You could take something to stay awake, but that would be a PED…and then he would judge you for using a PED, so you’d have to up the dosage as he started going on about your PED usage and making you more sleepy…which would probably make him go on about your PED usage again, so you might as well take the whole bottle and crash later.

    • asimonetti88 - Aug 20, 2014 at 4:05 PM

Your nutt sack could hit 555 home runs?

      • Reflex - Aug 20, 2014 at 4:50 PM

Sure, but could it remember their names?

  8. historiophiliac - Aug 20, 2014 at 1:23 PM

There is a bathroom wide stance joke begging to be made here…

    • asimonetti88 - Aug 20, 2014 at 4:48 PM

      I’m offended by this comment.

  9. lukedunphysscienceproject - Aug 20, 2014 at 4:56 PM

Why are you so sure, since they met in an airport, that either one of them were in Des Moines to do anything? Ever heard of layovers or connecting flights?

    • historiophiliac - Aug 20, 2014 at 5:25 PM

Oh, please. It’s Des Moines. They’re there for the bacon. Sure it’s a “layover.”

  10. learysdisciples - Aug 20, 2014 at 10:00 PM

They were going to Fong’s Pizza

    • spacenettle - Aug 20, 2014 at 10:34 PM

      Looks fun.
