Starlin Castro excused from Cubs after death of cousin and three friends in car accident

Aug 20, 2014, 9:59 PM EST

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was a late scratch from Wednesday night’s game against the Giants because of what was being called a family emergency. Now the heartbreaking details are out …

Word is the relative was a cousin and that Castro had a close relationship to all four of the people who died in the accident. The Cubs are likely to place Castro on the bereavement list before Thursday’s series finale.

Absolutely horrible. Condolences and prayers for peace for him and all his extended family and friends’ families no doubt ring hollow right now, but they are sincere.

So sad. Thoughts and prayers are with him and all the friends / families involved.
