A’s acquire catcher Geovany Soto from Rangers

As first reported by Chris Cotillo at MLB Daily Dish, the A’s have acquired catcher Geovany Soto from the Rangers for future cash considerations.

Oakland is already carrying three catchers in Derek Norris, John Jaso, and Stephen Vogt, but Vogt has been battling a right foot injury and Jaso tends to see a lot of action at designated hitter. Soto is a better defender at catcher than any of those guys.

Kyle Blanks (foot) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to open up a 40-man roster spot for Soto, who will meet up with the Athletics on Monday in Houston.

This trade will allow the Rangers to bring up Tomas Telis, a 23-year-old switch-hitting catcher. Telis was hitting .345 with an .866 OPS in 139 at-bats with Triple-A Round Rock. The Venezuelan hit .303 in 267 at-bats with Double-A Frisco prior to his call up to the Pacific Coast League.

“another good catcher gone”…? Nothing against Soto, or Gimenez, but they were expendable.

Yes, fire the guy who’s brought you your only period of consistent relevance in 40 years.

      Signed,

Astros fan who vividly remembers a majority Astros crowd at Globe Life Park or whatever the hell you call it now in 2008

uh no, not really we went to the world series twice and lost twice, and you would say something because the Astros suck! and this is ur best record in years!

My apologies, I was under the impression you were older than 11. Carry on.

Funny how you get on connor for not being older than 11, yet your screen name places you at about 13.

my screen name places me at 14, so I’m the oldest of the bunch, which, of course, makes what I say the most important. Carry on Hard On, you’re exactly right. Relevance to fans is as important as the crapshoot that is the current playoff system. And this is coming from an Indians fan.

Wait, wait, let me guess – “Nun uf this woulda happened if Nolan Ryan wuz still here!”.

I doubt this guy is 11, those calling for JD’s head are typically 60+, prefer “old school” baseball instead of this new-fangled sabremetric whatchamacallit, and get their baseball news from the football writers at the DMN or the Galloway/Engel hacks at the FWST. Oh, and get off their lawn.

      • Conner012367 - Aug 25, 2014 at 12:33 PM

oh come on i am 19! and hes made bad decisions, look at Ian Kinsler, hes doing well for the tigers while old prince sits on the shelf, i am not saying hes bad but his age is starting to catch up to him.

You do realize almost the entire freakin team has been on the DL this year, right? It looks like the Frisco Roughriders with Beltre, Elvis, and (a hobbled) Choo on rehab assignments out there. No GM salvages a team with the kind of DL devastation JD has faced this year. And Kinsler? With the Rangers, he was in decline and had attitude problems. He simply got the change-of-environment bump this year with Detroit, the decline will continue once he is comfortable there and his crappy attitude kicks back in. Fielder gets a serious injury for the first time in his career and somehow that’s JD’s fault? Holland hurts his knee in the off-season, Perez gets TJ Surgery, Harrison hurts his back again, Ogando out for the year and now Yu is having elbow problems so losing your entire rotation is somehow JD’s fault? You’re being ridiculous, kid.

Well, either Vogt becomes a full time of/1b, Norris or jaso play some 1b and moss sees more of time, or they’re trying to build an entire roster of catchers.

Each pitcher could have his own catcher!
