Andrew McCutchen departs game versus Cardinals after aggravating injured left rib cage

Aug 26, 2014, 9:23 PM EST

Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen returned in just 15 days from an avulsion fracture in his left rib cage and had hit three home runs in six games since being activated from the disabled list. But he aggravated the injury on this catch against the outfield wall in the third inning Tuesday versus St. Louis …

McCutchen did not look comfortable at the plate or in the field in the next two innings and was finally lifted in the top of the sixth. The Pirates announced moments later that he was experiencing left rib discomfort.

This is a bad situation for the Bucs, who entered play Tuesday night 1 1/2 games back of a Wild Card spot.

    Uh oh

That’s too bad for the Bucs and their fans. Hopefully just a tweak, not needing another DL stint. With Polanco looking like he’s not quite ready, losing McCutchen any length of time might be the playoffs. Trust me, as a Jays fan don’t let a little hot spell by Snider fool you.

Unfortunate injury. I don’t think they have a shot at the wildcard without McCutchen in the line-up. I just don’t think they have enough offense without him.

Why hasn’t someone come out and blamed Tony LaRussa or Kirk Gibson for this yet?
